Help with setting up my VH4 to work with midi cont.

I have a vh4, and I just purchased an ART X-15 Ultrafoot and cannot get it to work for some reason. Before I had this, I owned a cheap Randall 4 button footswitch, which didnt work either. Im assuming that these footswitches are not "plug and play" and some programming is required.I do not know these programming instructions. Any suggestions?

They would have to be on the same MIDI channels, and the footswitch must send Program Changes. Check the manuals to see how to do that.
 
No manuals for the footswitch. I tried doing what I read in the VH4 manual, but couldnt seem to get it to work. Same results with both switches. Im sure that its not a problem with my amp, more like a user error on my part haha. Anyone have step by step on how to do this? Thanks in advance!
 
For start check that both units are operating on the same midi channel or that they're on Omni mode (operating on all midi channels). I assume that you connect from the midi out of the controller to the midi in of VH4 right?
