I just got my new to me herbert.

The tube fuse was bad out of the box.

The problem is,,, i cant get the fuse out.

the other two come out fine with a twist, but the first one grinds a little bit and is loose but wont spring out.

I even tried some adhesive putty to try to pull it out.

anyone have some suggestions?

No, I have not opened it up yet.

thanks in advance

Holy crap......the EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!
I used a very very small head screwdriver and had to sorta 'pry' it out. Since the fuses are spring loaded, thats why its not popping out. Take your time. it will wiggle out of there.

Then tip the amp up and some broken glass from the fuse will come out.

when you pried it out

do you mean between the fuse holder and the socket fuse holder?

I managed to get out just the socket fuse holder(Just where the screw area is) ..........not the whole thing.
I mangled it up a little though. But popped in a new fuse and it worked good.
I wrote Peter about this and for a replacement holder since I did strip it out pretty good......and he sent me a new holder.
Hopefully you wont strip it out as bad as I did.....
I had a HARD TIME getting it out.....but it finally popped loose with working a small screw driver in around the edges.

i could not get it out without taking the chassis out.

luckily there is a small hole so that you can push it out.

lots of little broken glass.

new fuse works fine.

the only problem is that i cant get the bias high enough for the tubes even when the adjustment knob is maxed out.

what to do now?

check inside fuses.

master, volumes all the way down. turn the amp off, take all the tubes out, roll bias pots all the way down. turn on, turn off. put the tubes in. turn on, bias it again.

This is crazy man, I had absolutely 100% no issues with that head... I just realized I loved my VH-4 more... I don't understand how it could have arrived messed up   Was the box damaged or anything?

I had a similar experience after a fuse exploded inside the holder. I went through checking a whole bunch of shit, I would get like 40ma max. After that I woke up the next day to give it another chance before taking it to a tech & that's what I did.
Were the fuses inside blown or not?
OH, right, I forgot, I messed with the hum trimmer a bit too, don't know if it had anything to do with that.

no the fuses inside were good.

i took mark2c advise and checked my new multimeter out.

it turns out that i had it hooked into the wrong slot just as mark2c had said in the other thread.

i am such a tool.

this is why peter doesnt want these on his amps anymore!
