No yelling please, but I need some help. I have a Herbert with EL34s. I have issues cutting through the mix for solos. Please any recommendations? Settings that can help? I have already cranked the mids.

Thanks

What is youre tone chain and eq at the moment?
Is there another guitar player and with what amp?

I was running direct; no pedals. The other guitar player was using my Bogner Uber. I was playing straight through with a les paul with EMG 81.

The Uber is voiced better around mid freq. I would let the other guitar player adjust his eq a bit to let ther herbert stand out more. Watch out with cranking the gain, the compression lets you lose projection. Cranking the mids wont help with the herbert, i found that using a lower gain helps more.

The speaker cab and pickups you use is a big factor.

Emg are more on the treble side and dont like them with the herbert.
I have a uv777 with blaze pickups and a bad horsie brmr with breed pickups, the breeds are way more present and project the mid freq. far better.
My gibson explorer with EMG's would get lost fast.

Example: channel 2 with everything at noon, channel volume on 1 or 2 o'clock and the gain at 10 or 11. Use this and go on from here.(adjust the pressence and deep the way you like). The higher channel volume lets you open up more and lets you loose compression that stands in the way, this is subjective but it works great for me. When down picking and having the channel volume low i get a thin sound, opening the channel volume makes it thicker and more present.

Different strokes for different folks, it also depends on youre technique, everybode plays different. The way you attack, stroke, fret etc. This causes everybode to eq the amp different, keep that in mind.

Thanks. I am using a Diezel front loaded 4x12 cab with V30s. I will try the different settings. Do think 6550s would help also?

No, been there. This will make it worse. 6550 have lesser mid range freq. The do sound great.
Youre best bet is other pickups. Youve got a perfect cab and amp.

Im not playing with the guys now so i left it at that. When we start again im planning to change my blaze pickups to something with more mid range. Dont be afraid, losing power when changing from emgs can be eq'd in the amp. You can also go for passive high output pickups.

Also try placing the amp somewhere else in the room.

hey Ken...gimme a call whenever u can. I think i can help you out

Get a VH-4?

Seriously, I had all kinds of issues with my Herbert cutting in a band mix, it's fine if you are the only guitar player... but I put it up against a 6505+, a Marshall, and a Recto, and all 3 buried the Herbert...

.....just sayin' :(

how old is ur herbert?

i had a few problems too but than peter updated it to the new version and voila :)

I have experienced absolutely no issues cutting in a band mix with the Herbert with EL34s, I dont use the mid cut, I do enhance the mids at 2 or 3 oclock, not too much gain, and thats playing either against a 6505+ which complained of getting lost, or a VH4 which turned out to be a rather perfect compliment to the herb. Maybe its a pickup thing as mentioned above, i use Bareknuckle Nailbombs with my Blackmachines and no other processing unless i want to add effects for which i use the g system, and a line 6 filter pro for some more extreme sounds.

with my uv777 with the blaze pickups i also have problems cutting through, trust me on this one. For instance, check A. Woods tone where he does a demo of the Herbert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfAHCWciNTs&hd=1
you wont get burred wth that tone. Also pressence and treble are youre friend.

I dont know what pickups to get, i know a shop where they have guitars ready for you to test different pickups in, by that time ll give them a visit. I bought BKP alnico warpigs and didnt like them, damn that was a expensive try out

To be honest i like the pickups in the EVH guitars, have to check iff they have 7-string version.

Turn the mids up!

Don't have to scoop the mids out like a Uber or Recto.

Herbert mids are your friend. Thats why its such an amazing amp

Scoop the mids on the VH4

honestly? our other guitarist plays a Dual Recto, and he got totally lost. i then took some mids and presence away, he added more mids - now its extremely balanced. Some amps CAN bury the Herbert, yes, but whoever plays in a band should try to get a BALANCED sound out of ALL instruments, if one amp gets lost, simply adjust settings on BOTH amps, thats the only way how a band-sound works imho.
