Herbert: Different voicing between master volume v1 and v2 ?

Hi all,

I have a Herbert since 2-3 years and I'm really happy about it!

Since a couple of month I notice a tonal difference between master volume v1 and v2. I'm not sure if this tonal difference was always there from when I got the amp or not...

Is it supposed to be like that ? Is the circuit the same for both v1 and v2 ?

Could it be the time to change the tubes ? I have to say that I never changed the tube since when I bought it

Thanks!

cheers
Nicolas

I have the Herbert for about a year now and have a slightly noticeable difference in feel between the two.

There is no difference circuitwise. When you "feel" a difference (you need to crank one more than the other to get the same volume) thats due to (minor) differences in the pots resistance.
When you "hear" a difference thats also due to the (minor) impedance difference which also causes a (super minor) Miller Capacitance (treble response is different).

Since you know EXACTLY what's going on with This stuff... Could I ask you why in Channel 2 when you go from - to + you LOSE SO MUCH BOTTOM END, AND PUNCH??!!??

I pin the Volume, and Gain to max on Channel 2 with the switch in - If I could have Just a little more Gain in this Mode it would be my ULTIMATE Sound. Why does the Bottom and punch go away when you switch to + ? Is there any tweak to stop this?

Thanks,

Hi Nicolas. I own a Herbert too. If I set the master volumes the same, i.e 9:00 and switch from mv1 to mv2 the only difference I hear is a bit of a higher level going to mv2. Works for me since I only use mv2 for a boost during solos.

I've always felt that m2 sounded more warm & I've read other owners say the same. I can try all day fiddling with m1 & it never sounds the same. I'm on m2 by default & m1 is my boost.

Hi RR, well of course between - and + is a huge difference circuitwise. I could explain, but
a) it takes hours
b) I had to publish the circuit, which for obvious reasons I am not allowed to do

Getting a bit more Gain from the - mode shouldn't be rocket science. I would contact Peter, tell him where to get the mod done and he will contact your tech to tell him what to do.

thanks guys for your answers

I'm glad, it looks like it is the normal behaviour...

Also I'm thinking about buying new tubes for christmas :D and my choice is the EL34bht (looks like it is the trend...)
So the question is: do you know any provider in Europe for these tubes, with a decent price ?

Thanks
Nicolas

Nbart and Andy, I prefer V2 to V1, just because there's ANOTHER blue led.
I should plug my ISP in the switchable loop as well just for the sake of having more blue lights:rock:

Roid Rage : I never use chan 2- even with the gain dimed, or zeroed to get a clean, it does not it for me :(
