hey guys, sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't find the info when searching...
anyway I want to get a flightcase for my Herbert, but the manual says the amp has to be transported in the upright position.
meanwhile many live-in flight cases are made so that when the case is on the wheels, the amp/rack is in normal position, but when you carry the closed case the wheels are on the side, and hence the amp is lying on its backside inside the case.
why does the manual specifically say that the amp should always be transported in the upright position?
(apart from risk of damage if not following the normal cool-down procedure of the power tubes)

are you suggesting to remove tubes for every transport? that's not exactly practical!
I was wondering why the Herbert user manual states that the amp has to be transported in the upright position only, what could damage the amp if it was lying sideways?

only the power amp tubes. That's what I've read.

I'm interested in knowing this too, because I'll ship my Einstein to America next year when I move back.

I've never heard of anyone removing tubes prior to transport, no offense to you Joey, but that sounds like BS to me
Anyway, what I wanted to know, to help me spec out a suitable customized rack flightcase, is why exactly does the Herbert User Manual -specifically- state that the amp must never be transported on its side and only in the upright position?

I quote from page 5 of the manual:
"The Amplifier should be stored in a controlled environment, and it should be
transported in a suitable flight case. Make sure the Amplifier gets transported in
its normal operating position, not upside down or on its side."

If this is not a "general warning" then I suppose a case like the one in this picture is not suitable:

this way the amp would be facing upward with the controls towards the sky when positioned like the picture.
(and when the case is standing on the wheels, it is standing in normal position.)

thanks,

- Rune.

it's ok man, non taken. I just heard somewhere that if ur gonna ship an amp it's better to take out the power tubes. Not for every day move but for safe flight or long ride transportation. Either way it's all just things I've heard not sure if it's really true, maybe peter or Olaf could clarify

All I can say is that I brought my Herbert from Germany to the Canary Islands inside a CLOTH SUITCASE... with ALL MY CLOTH surrounng the head amp... I checked it in the plane... and It arrived PERFECTLY !!! (tubes IN)

So... it's real what they say... DIEZELS ARE BUILD LIKE A F@*!ing TANK

vives en las Canarias bekenove? yo vivo en barcelona. :D

I brought my VH4 from Germany to Brazil in a hard-shell case.
The amp arrived to me upside down and I’m pretty sure it had been dropped and abused during the ship because the case had many marks when it arrived :gethim:

But, apart from a damaged pre-amp tube, the amp was perfect.
Don’t know if the preamp tube was broken due to the abuse or due to the great temperature changes during the flight…

Besides of that, nothing happened with the amp… like said, it’s a panzer tank!!!

But it’s a good idea to remove the tubes before a long trip!!!

yes Joey it's probably a good idea when other people are going to handle the amp (too many ppl have no respect for other's property :gethim:)
oh well I think this flightcase is safe then :) amp in a suitcase to canaries..that's funny   did you just move one day in a hurry? :D

Nahhh, I went to Germany for vacation, and I went to Peter Stapfer's home... and while I was there, talking to him, playing his herbert, etc etc... my Herbert arrived via UPS form Bad Steben I think (from factory)...

I had no time to check it but, next day, I went to a Peter's concert (AMAZINGGGG !!! ), and he took the herbert there to me, so I picked it up, and I took it to my home... Sadly he took the packaging off, thinking in reducing volume in the checking... but well, I had to invent something (it was sunday and everything was CLOSED), and I putted it in out suitcase, covered by towels and clothes !!! I was in shock, scared as Scooby doo... thinking on what could happens to it... BUT... it arrived SAFE !!! AMAZING !!!

A nice story with a good ending...

Now on topic... I do personally plan to get a flightcase for my herbert, but I want a live-in one.. (I dont like having to move it too much, taking it off a flightcase etc... LIVE-IN flighcases !!! but I will get a combo flightcase... head + 10 rack spaces... ;) all in one... will weight a lot, I know, but it will be all in one, routed cabled ready to go... ;) A dream :D

Hey !!! De Barcelona ehhh ;) que bueno tio, voy de vez en cuando y me encanta... de hecho, es la unica ciudad de la Peni a la que me iria a vivir ;) Força Barça :p... (te contestare en ingles para que la peña lo lea tb)

Flightcases... I'm not 100% sure yet... I may get it from Paul Lenders... I must check prices and specs with him yet. I guess it would be a little priced, but I want to check it, his work is really pristine and great. I will also get a quote from a local store, and simply compare prices and see what I prefer... (shipping is important... because I dont think it will be cheap).

Also, it may be a long time before I go for it, but I will let you know for sure when I done ;)
