OK, let me begin by saying, this is my first post here. I regularly visit some other forums, HC, TGP, etc. I am excited to be here and get some help from the Diezel experts :D

I am having a challenge with my Herbert. I recently got it and I LOVE IT!!!! Holy SH****T!! It is such an amazing tone monster. My problem is, I want to be able to switch channels, loops, V2 all with my midi controller. Now, I have it hooked up using Herbert's phantom power via 7-pin midi cable, that works fine. The issue is that I can't seem to get Herbert to recognize the midi changes from the foot controller. I have tried to mess around with the obvious stuff, midi channel on the foot controller, midi channel on Herbert. I program Herbert easily, which is so very nice! But when I push the foot controller button, no change on Herbert. The led above the store button lights when I push a button on the midi controller, meaning to me that Herbert is getting the info, it is just not changing. ARGH!!!!

I would appreciate any help you guys could offer!! I really want to get the midi up and running. Thanks in advance for your time.

Thanks for the reply...

I am just trying it with an old ADA MC-1. I have used this controller for many years and it has been great. However, any foot controller should work. I have a Liquid Foot Pro midi controller also, it's at the studio and programmed for another set-up. I don't think the foot controller should make a difference.

Unless it does, and I am assuming something I shouldn't be!!!

Is the midi recieve channel on omni ?

Please see manual.

Hey Peter,
Wow, thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. I read the manual and have tried to put herbert into Omni mode. I do think I would prefer it have a dedicated channel, yet I wanted to get it up and running first.

To get Omni, the manual says: Hold down mute and activate V2 quickly. I hold down mute and the lights on Mid Cut, V2, Loop, Mute, Store all light up, yet they don't blink as the manual suggests. I am probably making some ridiculous mistake here, and I apologize, yet I am frustrated. Really want MIDI from Herbert!!

Again, thanks in advance for your time!!

Kind Regards,
Tim

If it isn't receiving any commands, maybe the MIDI cable/controller isn't running on the same 3 pins.

Thanks Steve, I tried 2 different controllers, and even tried a 5 pin cable with a power supply for the controllers. Still no luck.

I am obviously missing something basic in the programming. I can set a midi channel manually on Herbert, no program changes, and when I try to set Omni the lights that should light do go on, they just don't blink, like the manual says they are supposed to. So, no program changes on Herbert. I will try again tomorrow, it's late here and I have been at it for a while :bash:

Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions?? Am I not reading the manual correctly...Peter said follow the manual, so maybe I am unable to process what the words are saying :loco:

Anyway, any ideas welcome...thanks!!

Are you in the US? Call Terry @ Diezel 1-770-378-3456. He can help you out. Also, if I am not mistaken, there is a fuse on the Midi board if you feel like pulling the chassis to have a look. Its been known to have a mistake in the manual, so even RTFM doesn't work sometimes. But, the new one on the website works, as I have programmed mine.

But, even using a 5 pin and power, you got to make sure the right pins are wired to transmit data. Pins 1/6 are hot, 3/7 go to ground, and the others transmit data. Even trying a few cables may not get you where you need to be! That doesn't help you though if you still cannot program it.

Thanks Steve!! I do believe I need a human to speak to at this point or at least someone to walk me through the process at this point. I will definitely contact terry and see where that leads. Thanks again for the tip!!!

I may check the fuse as well. I had not even thought there may be something internal that would cause this. Just figuring I am missing something, which still may be the case as well ;)

Just grab you a Columbus pedal when you get Terry on the line. I think he has some in stock. You can switch with an XLR or MIDI.

Steve

Yeah Steve, that may be the way I have to go, I just wanted it to work with the gear I have...didn't want to fork over more $$ for ANOTHER foot controller.

Anyway, thanks for your help and advice, really useful! Any other tips for a new Herbert owner!?!?

In the end, I sent my Herbert to Terry at Diezel USA, in Nashville. After I spoke to him and we went through things, he decided that there was a more technical issue and he probably needed to replace a midi circuit board, as I WAS doing things correctly, Herbert just wasn't receiving the switching messages.

Anyway, I can barely stand it!!! I have only been without Herbert for a couple of days, yet it seems like forever!!! I guess that just goes to show...

Once you go Diezel, you can never go back

Thanks to those who made suggestions and helped. I will let you all know how it goes when I get Herbert back and the midi is up and running!
