Ive just sold my Roadking to buy an Uberschall, but it was faulty so now i have £3000 to spend on an amp. Ive been debating whether to get an Axe FX Ultra and a 2:90, but ive already got a G System, and i like the fact it is just Effects and has a midi interface to link up with the Herbert.

My band plays things along the lines of Atreyu, A7X and Lamb of God. I have Invaders in my guitars cos i like that hot whiny sound, but i also dig the groove metal thump, so which amp would suit me best or do i sell the g system and go with the axe fx?

I know Andy Wood is having an Axe Fx rig being built, but is it really that good to replace a tube amp?

Cheers

There is a log debate on many forums on the web about amp modellers/sims and real tube amp...google is you best friend here.
Andy Wood,i think, is using AXE fx only for fx not amp sims.

If you want my opinion NO amp modeller is like a good tube amp..totally different concepts with pro and cons but talking about "tone"
go with the old school tubes. ;)

VH4 Herbert AxeFx
Sound: 10 10 8.5
Reliability: 8 7 10
Versatility: 9 7.5 10
Features: 5 5 10
personal taste: awesome modern nerver ending possibilitys

Sound: Dynamics, Overtones, Compression, basically the quality of tone
Reliability: How often does the thing break down. (tube amps can never get a 10 here because tubes are basically not very reliable)
Versatility: How many Styles can one get.
Features: Channels, loops, "mid-cuts", tuner-outs and built-in effects.

combined with a g-system the diezels would get a 9 in features.

In my experience you will mostly use the same 4 sounds on your amp-sim, exept when working in a studio.
I choose the Herbert, because it is really my sound. Just go to all kinds of stores and play any amp you can; whatever suits you best is your baby.

just my 2 cents

Thanks for the replys guys, ive decided to stick with my G system since i gassed after one for sooo long. So that just leaves me to get an ISP pro rack G and a strobe tuner. Anything else to go in my rack that would be of benefit?

Im still torn between the VH4 and the Herbert

I was looking at harmonizer pedals earlier, wanting that A7X harmony thing, any recommendations?

Thanks for the help

If you really love them both equally, then go for the vh4. it has more versatility, so even if your taste develops and changes, it is more likely that you still like your vh4.

there is a harmonizer in the g-system, but if you wanna have it before the preamp (cause you said you're looking for a pedal) then i can only recommend eventide (the eclipse does the best job, but the pitchfaktor is ok too).
the best for little money is the rocktron intellipitch, used of course.

hope i could help!
cheers

The Herbert is going to get you tones closer to Atreyu and A7X.....as for Lamb of God, their tone is very mid heavy (they use Mark V's) and IMO the VH-4 will get you a much closer Lamb of God tone...

With that out of the way, I have owned both amps several times, I currently have the VH-4 but have gone back and forth between it and the Herbert several times... for me and my band I finally decided on the VH-4 and am sticking with it, however, I personally think the Herbert is more versatile, it has a better clean channel, the switchable loop can be either series OR parallel, and with the 3 channels, channel 2 having the +/- switch, and the mid cut, the possibilities are borderline endless...

The VH-4 is MUCH more compressed then the Herbert, I like to consider the VH-4 the"Mark Series" of the Diezel amps, with it's mid-range emphasis and extremely tight overall sound, it gives off that type of vibe...

Long story short, from the little info you gave, I think the Herbert would be a better fit for you...

On a side note I've heard several stories of people having problems with their G-system and the Diezel heads, not sure if it's the VH-4 of Herbert (I wanna say VH-4) but I have no experience with this, just throwing up a caution flag... I know Andy Wood uses his G-system with his Herbert with no issues what-so-ever...

And lastly, to be completely honest, you can't go wrong with either head, seriously.... PM me if you have any questions, I've A/B'd both of them extensively, good luck man!!!

Problems with G-system and 4 cable method hookup is very common..hum,ground loops etc..
..but also the AXE FX in that setup suffers from the same issue..so the problem is the signal path.

Of course in both machine noises can be reduced to a minimal level..G-system can be modded for more trasparency..
..but..G-system + hum eliminator + mod = Eventide Eclipse price.
Axe FX IMHO can be very good if Cliff releases an only FX version without amp sims to open up the target.

So summing up:
-H8000fw: over the top..also in price range  ..cons: a lot of preset are not suitable for guitar.
-H7600: if you have that money go for the H8000 better value and power for what you pay.
-PCM96: a lit better reverb and dealy that Eventide but less "strange effect" and harm is Eventide territory.
-Eclipse: more guitar oriented than H8000/7600/PCM96, firmware 4.0 recude preset latency and adds Eventide stomps preset.
TC stuff (nova,g-system,gmajor 2) great value for money and 100% guitar oriented but tone suck (compared to Eventide,Lexicon) and less depth of editing.

I'm having a terrible gas attack for a H8000.....

Herbert is more versatile than the VH4. I had a chance to play a silver face VH4 next to my Herbert yesterday, and with the mid cut disengaged, the Herbert sounds very close to the VH4 to my ears. With the addition of the mid cut feature to the Herbert, is it's greatest asset. It makes the amp to me sound almost "studio quality" strait out the cab.

Hi,

I had a G-System and sold it. I really liked the effects, but it has no true-bypass.
Therefore the A/D D/A thing killed the brutal tone that you can get out of the herberts uncompressed channel2.

Maybe it works better for those players who dont prefer the more brutal tones?

And for "just" having it in the loop, you can also buy a much more cheaper G major and place it in the switchable loop, so no tone suck, when not needed =)

i agree with the g-sytem problems. sold mine cause of the tonesucking. i actually have the same amount of tonesucking with my intellifex (100euro), which i use for delay and hush(gate).
But if you love your g-system, you will find a way to get along with it.
As long as you stick with your Diezel!

I have an Axe FX Ultra and an Einstein

the 2 solutions are very good

The real amp is plug and play while the rack is plug and dial

You can't be wrong with thoses choices, the axe will require more time for tweaking, adjustements ect... but The axe will be fantastic for recording, home training, play at low volume. It can also be as good at high volume.

I've tested the axe as a simple multi effect in the einstein loop without any problem of hum.

Whatever, if you don't want to spend time tweaking, go for the amp.

If i had to keep only one, it would be the Axe FX (flexibility, one unit that does everything...and allow you to control everything). I bought the (second hand) Einstein as a backup system and to be able to compare seriously how the Axe Perform in front of a great Amp (i had a bogner xtc that i sold few month after owning an Axe FX). The axe mimics prefectly the chanel 3 of the VH4 but also a lot of other good amps. But it require some times to fine tune things.

Having booth is the best solution
