I won't be able to play either. I currently have a Mesa Mark V which is great in every area except the modern metal tone is disappointing. No matter what I try. I have a 10band e.q. and 2 different boost pedals. An ex friend has a Herbert and the tone was to die for. Any advantages to the VH4?

Herbert is typically better for metal, although it is pretty flexible. The VH4 is less forgiving and has a little more snarl to it's distortion, not really a metal amp but it will work.

+1

I think the VH4 is more than capable of metal; but not your standard metal. I think it's too unforgiving and "cold" (I suppose you could call it that) for some metal-headz.

I think, on other forums at least, it receives a little bit of slaggin' for that reason. But, and no direspect meant to these people, these players don't know how to tweak an amp and to play to it's strengths. Which, in the VH4's case, is it's nuances and sudden attack and sudden drop-off. They may be too used to their 5150's or Rectomofiers.

Yeah, I personally prefer the VH4, but it's so cold that it can be difficult to use at times.

I've heard the Herbert has a trouble getting through the mix in certain bands. I find that hard to believe but it could be true (but certainly not a deal breaker, in my opinion).

I wanted a Herbert but got a great deal on a VH4S.....
I couldnt be happier!

It handles everything I throw at it easily. And we play alot of metal.
Just my 2cents!

For what its worth........I still want a Herbert though! :D

VH4 will do excellent at metal. Tight and percussive is good. The Herbert is a metal machine because it's got the mid cut feature, with that dialed in just right it is incredibly brutal and tight.

thanks for the input. i will go herbert in about six weeks. the markV was a bit of a let down....not as good as the IV for brootal tone, no matter what you do. My band's other guitarist has a B52 and it seriously sounds better to me.

both are top notch. depends on what you call metal. To me, metal is Sabbath, Metallica...which the VH4 is perfect for. But if you are into what the "kids" call Metal today...the Herbie will reign! i personally like the Herbie more for newer metal stuff due to the mid cut & such.

good luck!!

Exactly!!
Metal for what we play is Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, Alice in Chains, Testament, Megadeth....(80's/90's metal)
and the VH4 covers all this with ease.
Never really tried to play '5 finger death punch' or whatever is played on the radio today thats called metal...
but for My metal...it does it easy. Hell we even toss a little Lamb of God in there and it sounds Incredible! :D
Bottom line is this.......if it works for you......what you play...then thats the amp to get. ;)

Asking whether to get the V or the Herbster is almost like having to choose between two identical, completely outrageously hot and over-the-top vivaciously sexy twins...

No matter which way ya go, you'll be happy. Of course, once in a while you'll wanna 'test drive' the sister, but that can come down the road...

V.

I would go for the herby for the modern metal tones. or you could get both because one diezel is not enough

I really dig the sound of your band  That being said and since you have the VH4 and the Herbinator, which one do you prefer for 'your sound'?

You can't go wrong with both man.

That's what I stumbled upon here several times, to get the one that first pops up (if looking for used ones).

Wanted a VH4 initially, then have been leaning more towards the Herbie, but today I came across a good deal: 2007 VH4 for 1800 EUR. If everything goes as planned, I'll go get it on Monday next week :)

Check out this guy's tone! He has Tool NAILED with a Herbert, and Adam Jones from Tool actually plays the VH4 models.

Not necessarily THIS video of his Tool cover band, but check out some of his solo videos.

Check out the two-minute mark and on. It's a pretty good representation of that Tool tone, I think. Well, minus the cranked Superlead (keep in mind it's recorded with my built-in webcam).

Right!
I've owned a vh4 and it can do a lot of metal and also death metal..but.....

..my new Herbert on ch2+ or ch3 with mid cut is truly another story.
really i've never heard such violence,aggressivness..but not less important tone articulation and note definition in the same time.
Vh4 is very tight but Herbert I think is not much more loose..the first difference is the less dry sound on all channels.

In the same time if i want to relax jamming i pick up my strato, turn on my eclipse and on ch1 and ch2 - and i find my peace of mind.
