i have a 2007 herbert and i just wanted to ask what difference i would hear if i put a RFT in pre slot 1, it has a ruby in it now but im curious how it would sound.

and what pre tube combinations is everybody running right now.

I have all stock ruby except for v1 which is an RFT. I can't remember what it was like before the RFT because I switched it early on. I do remember liking it alot more with the RFT though. Not very helpful but....

RFT´s are not recommended for V1. Like Ei Tubes. Highest Gain but not reliable because microphonics.

I have RFT's in V1 & V2 of my Herbert. I hate Chinese tubes, so as they go, I replace them with others. I find Chinese tubes very bright. Pre and power. The RFT's are a little darker, more focused in the med to med-low mid area (plenty bright though). The gain is a little more raspy. I run Channel 2 at 2:00 and Channel 3 at 11:30, which is more than plenty. I think the Chinese are more high mid/bright voiced. When the other pre's get noisy, I'll probably pop in some JJ's. I just like better pre's in the early tone slots. Keep in mind that, what I like, others may hate.

My Herbert is in no way dark. I keep my presence a hair past noon. If I turn it anywhere past 12:30/1:00, it will rip your eardrums open and make them bleed from the piercing highs. I play with the master pretty loud, so I don't need much presence. I use very low output pickups that are very clear also. I imagine if I used over-wound pickups, too much gain, and played lower volume, it might be dark.

anybody tried tung sol, jj, sovtek lps, or penta labs in a herbert yet.

i think i remember olaf last year mentioned the rft in a herbert.

If that's a newer Herbert like within the last year you have a JJ in v-1, it will just be branded TAD, Ruby, or whatever. Penta Labs is a just a chinese tube like in the rest of the slots, which if you go for an all chinese preamp it will be tighter, brighter, and clearer in my opinion seeing as that what I use, and the difference between the JJ and chinese in v-1 as far as I can tell is a better clean channel and a darker slightly punchier overdrive for the JJ ( like bass punch, chinese have more "note" punch if that makes sense). I tried a tung-sol in v-1 before as well, it was pretty damn tight and clear but did something with the voicing I couldn't ever put my finger on as well as made the clean very plunky in a weird way, wasn't a fan, although there's a few that say they like it alot, just have to try that one out for yourself, seems to be a love/hate tube with people I've talked to, sounds badass in a boogie recto though, with chinese in the rest of the slots. I also just happen to have tried a LPS, it was way too bassy and loose, great leads though, maybe in combo with a tung-sol it would be awesome? But hope that helps some, if not ...kiss my ass... ah I'm just joshin' ya :) .
