So i just dropped $400 on a custom road/flight case for my Herbert. It has a 2" thick foam around it though. What do you all think? Is that overkill, average, or good compared to what you all have?

Its JUST for the head itself.

dude i think you made the right decision. i play professionally and get my cases from the same guy you got yours form and night after night no matter where im at i open up my case and my ampis in perfect shape. my rack case has rolled into walls so many time and i just knew my tubes were broke, open it up and nothing. lets be honest you paid how much for an amp? ;) so whats 400 dollars for protection? you could have skipped out on protecting your rig and then you spend more money repairing it after that one night some drunk roadie is rushing you off the stage and then boom! you wont regret not ever having to worry bought the safety of your rig, i know i dont

Yea, thats pretty much how i justified it. Plus he was a really cool nice guy. Which makes a difference for me.
I wanted the rolling case with the rack space but that would have weighed too much ESPECIALLY since we tour around the country with a school bus. So i just got the single case for the head.
Im just curious as to what everyone else paid for theirs though..

I'm going to second the big ass foam as a good ass choice. My head/rack case dropped from 2 feet one time :( , my heart sank, but opened it up, fired it up, and played good as ever, Rock Hard case btw. I got it second hand but I think the guy I got it from said he paid 800 for it, I don't know if that included shipping or not though. I think I paid 300 for it or around abouts, been awhile since that purchase.

Andy/Rob, who did you guys get the cases from? Anyone you can recommend on the west coast?
Thanks!

Hey bro, get your cases from Rik Asher at Riks music, 865-691-9590. he ships nationwide and his cases rock!

Hi there, regarding amps packed in a flight case with a hood:
Does it usually rest on it's for feet; or should it rest on a large piece of foam leaving the feet free floating/or just touching the bottom?

I noticed that when resting on it's own feet, the foam is almost crushed to nil when the case is closed -
I now rest the amp on a piece of foam that fits "in between" the feet and leaves the amp resting on it's amphousing...
When the case head closes, the amp fits tightly - surrounded in foam...
