Herbert sound/tone question

I've noticed playing my Herbert that the tone with the Mid Cut off seems to be slightly muffled, or less open sounding (I'm terrible at describing sound) than with the Mid Cut engaged. This occurs on channels 2 and 3, but is much more noticable on channel 3. My settings on channel 3 are usually gain 12:00, treble around 1-1:30, mids usually around 1:30-2, and bass around 1:00. Presence and deep are generally at 12:00, maybe a little higher on prescence. I also usually run the mid cut intensity at 12:00-1:00, and level around 12:00. Channel 2 settings are similar to channel 3, though I play with the mids a lot more (both up and down), and the gain us usually at around 2:00. I'm not sure if the settings matter as far as what I'm hearing, but figured I'd list em. I'm playing through a Bogner Ubercab (V-30, G12T75s) and an oversized Bogner 2x12 (V-30s).
I guess the best way to describe what I'm hearing is that when swithing the Mid Cut off it sounds like most amps do when you really scoop the mids-the mids dont sound scooped, it just has that blanket over the cab type sound. I was expecting that with the mid cut OFF, and the mids on the channel eq higher rather than lower, the amp would sound more 'open', like my XTC or Marshall does when the mids are increased (not expecting it to sound like a Bogner or Marshall, just the more open type sound typical of more mids).
I dont know how much sense this makes-as I mentioned, I suck at describing tone/sound. I was wondering if it could be that the volume levels between mid cut ON vs OFF could cause what I'm hearing. The volumes seem to be pretty closely matched, but it seems perceived volume levels can change with EQ changes, even if the actual volume is the same. My other thought was that it has something to do with one of the preamp tubes.
Once again, I hope this makes some kind of sense. I LOVE this amp, and more often than not play with the mid cut engaged on ch 2 & 3, but was expecting a more open/present tone when the mids were not cut.

Thanks

midcuts affect around 400hz, so having it off will let you hear less mids. When I switch the midcut off I run the presence 3-4:00-ish, otherwise around noon.

im not as technical as nbarts but i run midcut on all the time but the intensity set really low like 8:00 8:30. those settings are really nice to my ears

Thanks Nbarts & Andy. I"'m gonna try playin around with the eq and midcut settings tonight to see if I can get closer to the sound I'm looking for. I'm pretty sure Herbert is capable, at least from clips I've listened to. I think I just need to become more familiar with setting it. It's quite a different beast than the XTC.

Have you tried recording some different settings and listening back to them? The Herbert has a certain darkness to the tone, while in the room may sound dull but will sound great miced up.

No, haven't tried recording it yet. Good idea, thanks. Maybe it'll give me the motivation to set up my recording gear again-and re-learn how to use it. My daughter is all of 6 weeks old now-I've barely had time to do much more than plug in and play a few minutes a day, without incurring the wrath of my wife :(

On a side note, I've been trying to convince my wife that the baby NEEDS an Einstein or VH4 :D So far, she ain't falling for it.

Raising presence did the trick, thanks nbarts.
