Herbert - switchable loop doesn't work!

So, I just took delivery of Brad's Herbert the night before last and after reading (and re-reading) the manual, I began exploring the effects loops. Using an Eventide Timefactor pedal with in/outputs set to line level, I tried the parallel loop. Works fine, sound is a bit off but that's probably just me toying with the mix volume... regardless, it works. Serial loop, works just fine. Switchable loop? doesn't work at all. Tried a Carbon Copy, a Voodoo Labs Microvibe, as well as the aforementioned Eventide. Checked and double-checked the connections, turned on and off the effects units, turned on and off the loop. Nothing. The led lights up when the loop switch is engaged, but no sound, no alteration of sound, no nothing. Oh, and tried different cables even though these work fine in the other loops.

So, from reading through a couple of posts here that I found via search function, I tried plugging one end of a cable into the return and touched the tip of the other end... nothing. Any ideas???? This is a BIG thing for me as I intended on setting MIDI presets for each channel bringing the loop in and out of various ones. As things stand right now, that's not possible.

Help!!??!

Hey Guys,

I asked him to post this up here and get some good advise. I got the amp from Todd and never had a moment of trouble with it but always used the serial loop. Lets get this figured out if its a easy amp operation fix, if not and it is an actual hardware issue with the amp I will get it taken care of for him.

Peter, Olaf, Terry any ideas?

Lead us through it, please. What exactly do you connect where? And what are you trying to achieve? Are you doing switchable parallel or what?

Please open the amp and read the version number on the smaller
board on the back.

Maybe it should be replaced.

Please reply

Well, the original post pretty much says it all. Basically, what I'm trying to achieve is hooking up the Eventide delay effect into the switchable loop so that I can create MIDI presets such as the following -

Ch1 = clean + delay (from switchable loop)
Ch1 = clean + no loop
Etc...

Switchable send to effect input, effect output to switchable return. Effect unit set to line level, turned on, etc.. Loop switch engaged, nothing. That's pretty much it.

Wow, Mr Diezel himself. Thanks very very much for responding! I will do just that. Assume you mean remove amp from chassis? Also, which board and what should the number look like (format-wise or other). I've never gotten inside a Diezel before so just want to ensure I look for and report back on the right thing.

By the way, this is a crushing amplifier!! Kudos to you sir. Best I've ever played without a doubt. I now find myself wanting an Einstein :-)

well after you open up old herbie there is one circuit board that stretch's
the entire chassi and a smaller one that sits on top of the other circuit board
after you take the amp out of the shell and flip it upside down you should have
no trouble finding the small circuit

Thanks! I'll do just that over the weekend and report back. I have an unexpected work thing that's popped up this morning which will keep me away from home 'til Sunday, and at that time I'll open her up.

Ok, so I'm finally back home from the surprise business trip and ready to get this taken care of. Now, what exactly do I need to do to get the amp out of the chassis? Does this entail disassembling the entire head case (the 4 corner brackets, etc..)?? I just want to be sure I don't mess anything up. Please let me know at your earliest convenience, and thanks again!

Easiest way to do it on the Herbie is to set it vertical(cabinet on the side, tall ways), power transformer(bigger one) on the up side(closest to you). Unscrew the chassis screws(four big ones on the bottom) then lift up a little so you don't drag it on the tolex and pull it out grabbing by the power transformer, easy as pie. Then take the cabinet, set it front grill down, flip the chassis (tubes down, be careful with the tubes) and set it wrong way down on the cabinet(tubes and x-formers in the cabinet).

Hope that helps,

Nick

Thanks very much. Didn't notice the big screws on the bottom before. I'll give it a shot. Assume reverse procedure to re-install? In other words, nothing in particular to watch out for when putting it back in or anything?

You need a tech, please contact Terry

Thank you. Apologies, but who is Terry exactly and where/how can I reach him?

Update - Amp is now in Duolos' hands for repair assessment!
