I have a Herbert, one of the first ones, so its pretty old by diezel standards, and it need a check-up. The switchable loop sounds like its shorting as i get weird crackly noises when its engaged, even when there's nothing in there. There's a little clip of it here...

Also, its not sounding too good at the moment, the tubes only have about 6 months of use on them and i changed them for that reason, but its still not sounding like any of the others I've heard. Ive always suspected a fault due to UPS, but its not exactly easy to get another one to do a side by side comparison. I just remember the ones i tried at trade shows sounding a damn sight better, although this could be down to the cab or whatever. Is there anywhere in the UK where i can send it for a check-up? I sent it to Peter last time, but UPS gave it the special treatment and even though it was boxed and in a flight case, they still managed to bend the chassis and shake something lose inside so it had to go back, so I'm loath to send it again. What do you guys recommend?

Cheers

James

I'm not a tech, but I think before you start running around looking for a tech you should try to change your V4, V5 tubes.

Try phoneing Doug of Diezel UK, where abouts are you from? I have a Herbert though I'm sure you'll be miles away.

Well i just went down to exeter to see my friend and dropped into mansons while i was down here, one of the few diezel dealers in the UK with any models on the shop floor. I checked a herbert out through a soldano cab and low and behold, it was fucking awesome, far better than mine at home, way tighter, way more saturated without being mushy. Now some of this may well have been down to the soldano, but honestly, this is what my herbert should sound like. Its not tubes, ive changed them before and i dont remember it sounding like this, something must be wrong. Does peter still haunt around this place or is it better if i email him? I emailed doug, but hes not so quick at getting back so ill have to give the man a ring later. I dont really want to send it to germany because of what happened last time, but if theres no other way around it, then i guess ill just have to grin and bear it.

Sounds like a (What's Wackelkontakt in english?) loose soldering/bad contact. Does this happen with and without the loop?

cheers dude, ive sent peter an email, but it will be difficult for him to recommend anything other than sending it to germany without hearing it or knowing the defect.

Anyways, its been ages man, hows it going? I see youve come on leaps and bounds with your own amps, is this a new career line?

Well it could well have been broken since UPS fucked it up, but becuase i never use the loop, i never noticed it. I only noticed it by accident when i hit the loop button instead of V2 and noticed the horrible sounds. So i can disengage the loop and it works fine
