So tonight my beloved Herbert started crackling and making awful noise while bypassed and when turned on!

I'm hoping its a bad tube or something relatively inexpensive and easy but I'm not getting my hopes up, does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

I changed to a different speaker cable and power cable and nothing seemed to work, then all of the sudden it went away and I was able to finish practice with it. I have a very busy weekend coming up and really need my Herbert up and running with no issues and cant really afford to risk not knowing what it was doing tonight.

So any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have a back up mesa, but the thought of using it makes me cringe. I really love my Herbert and don't want to be without it, as i'm sure you can all understand!!!!

Sounds like a tube issue. Crackling and then stopping is most likely a tube or tubes going bad. If you want to be up and running I would change out the tubes for fresh ones.

You can change preamp tubes one at a time, just to see if you can find the culprit. If none of those are the issue, then move on to power tubes.

If it's still happening after tube changes, then you may have a more serious issue. I would ask Peter's opinion, he will tell it to you straight.

90% of problems with tube amps are caused by tubes. 9.9% are caused by "user error" and 0.1% are caused by faulty hardware. Of course this only applies to highend tube amps ;)

Awesome thanks for the quick replies!
I was hoping it was a tube, but wasn't sure since it was also doing it when in standby.

Well i swapped out all the preamp tubes and the problem still occurs!

any ideas?

If it does it on standby then it's probably a power issue..
