I would like to direct my message to Peter Diezel himself (and the Diezel community as well).
Peter, hello. My name is BJ, I'm from Boston, Massachusetts. In April 2007 I purchased a new Herbert in Boston. Along with the Herbert, I purchased the Diezel rear-loaded speaker cabinet. So my rig was Diezeled up! I made this purchase after trying out the Herbert and falling in love with its hot rock sound. Whew! what a naked sound to get from an amp straight with no stompboxes or anything. I was hooked! I was proud!

Anyway, here's my issue: in May of 2007, a month after taking possession of my new Diezel rig, it crapped out (I was playing it maybe three times a week). All of a sudden the sound lost all semblances of the smooth, big, aggressive, and ballsy sound I fell in love with. The sound became thin, weak, and tinny (and that was channel 3). I went back to the place I bought it, and was there was nothing I could do as there are no authorized repair dealers on the east coast. A couple weeks went by and because of no other alternative, I packed it the best I could and sent it to Uwe Salwender in California (this was scary). I finally got the thing back about July. After playing it about two months the loop crapped out. Didn't want to send it to California again so I had a local Boston service look at it. After two attempts, which took a total of two months, they managed to get it working (there are still issues). I got it back in October 2007. In January 2008, the life of the amp again went out. That is, the sound again became thin, weak, and tinny. After some pondering I turned it over to the local service here in Boston in February. The local service still has it, as they have not had a chance to get to it. So I'm without it as I write this, indeed, since I bought the amp in April 2007, I've had it for a total of six to maybe eight months out of the 11 months since I bought it.

Needless to say, I am very very unhappy with my Herbert experience. Yesterday I stopped back in the store where I bought the Herbert. I tried out another new Herbert they have up for sale and man! what a sound! I was gone again. My question to you is: given the negative experience I've had with this expensive, yet very special amplifier, how can I restore it to its former glory?

Please respond.

my Herbert is 100% ok, but what if i'd need a tech inspection in the future?
where would i send it to? i live in Sardinia - Italy.
there are repair point here in Sardinia? if not where in Italy?

Danke Herr Peter

99% of the "issues" are tube related.
You can swap preamp tubes without a tech and with the bias testpoints even put in new powertubes yourself - end of story.

I'm also sure that it's a tube issue...

My advise, rebiase them... if still bad, retube it properly...

Diezels are the best machines out there... but they are machines... (and also they have consumable parts, like tubes etc... the same you have in your printer with the ink cartridges... you must change them when the are empty... you dont claim HP or EPSON when you're out of ink ... do you ?).

Tubes are a rare thing... sometimes last eternally, but sometimes are bad... and you have to change them...

And diezel&gas... Dont put the bandage before the scar... ;) Enjoy the amp.

Everything in your post indicates a tube issue. No big deal really, Get a new set, rebias and be happy. Don't ever trust techs, learn this stuff yourself if you want to have the right results! I do.
There's not much that could go wrong internally on the amp that would cause those intermittent results other than the tubes themselves.

prob a tube issue but its reoccurrence suggest to me that maybe you are using instrument cables instead of speaker cables when you go from amp to cab witch will blow the amp every time
