Herbert V1 position? Consensus on preamp brand?

If looking at amp from the front would V1 preamp be on the far left? Anyone have a good cocktail for the preamp (metal tonz)?

Very smooth and fluid. It also seems to take the insane amount of "in your face" gain down a bit.
I also LOVE a Telefunken in that spot.
