Herbert-Whats the 411 on power tubes and tone?

I'm playing pretty much everything besides metal and traditional jazz. I'm curious if someone has a good description of which tubes generate what tones?
I'm looking for nice cleans-blues-brown sounds-heavy lead.
Any insight would be great! One last thing open back 2x12 or closed back in your opinion???

Prob EL34s or maybe a combo of EL34s & 6L6/6550. That would prob be a great place to start.

and i prefer closed back cabs with the Diezels. But diff strokes for diff folks.
