Hi

I hope not to ask a question which has already been answered multiple times - but I found nothing about Herbert...

I would like to "calm" my Herbert a little via removing the most left and the most right powert tube from the amp.

When I do this I have no Biasing work to do? Am I right? Are there any other hidden dangers?

What do you hope to accomplish by doing this? If it's to make Herbie "quieter" it's a futile attempt.

Thanks for your answer.

I feared something like this. But I don't get it why? I thought removing the tubes means 120 Watts instead of 180 Watts.

Another (possibly silly) question... Would it make sense to run my Herbert with 4 Ohm into my 8 Ohm cabinet?

Power and 'loudness' are not a linear relationship. (logarithmic I think)

I could be wrong about this but I think to double to decible rating you need 10x the power. The reverse is true. To halve the decible rating of a herbert you would need to cut it down to 18 watts.

Cutting from 180 to 120 WILL have an effect, but not a huge one.

yeah - the power reduces to 120W, but that doesnt make a difference in volume. at least not a noticeable one. ;) it just reduces a bit of the headroom, but there is than still more then enough.

to run the amp 4ohm into 8ohm would slightely change your sound, but nothing else - besides that it isnt recommendet (but the Diezels take that).

Correct. :) To double the volume you need 10 times the watts, so to make the volume half as "quiet" you need to cut down to 18 watss.

4 Ohm into 8 Ohm of the cab will have an effect on the sound, but also on the "loudness" - only a bit though....

Personally I think the Herbert is pretty well suited for "bedroom playing"...I do it all the time...it's not the same as having it upwards of 10, but it's still better than any amp I heard at low levels...tube amp, that is...

I was always under the impression that the 180 watts of the herbert
was to keep the bass and mids in check and tight not for big sound
but it can also do that
