My rubys crapped out so I put in gt 6l6s tubes, the cleans are very nice but ch2 doesnt sound the same,it seams brighter, like as if the mean growl went away like when I had my 34's in it.Is it me or my memory fading? Its just something doesnt sound the same,I want Dark...like Godsmack!

ps 2 1/2 yrs later and Diezel Herbert is still number 1...

That is exactly what happens when you put 6L6 in a Diezel. Just put a set of fresh EL34 in and the growl is back again :D

Give the SED´s a go! To me the SED´s sound fantastic, specially when you like british (old good sounding Marshalls) sounds. My Steini makes a really great job with the SED´s. No doubt the EL34B-STR´s are very good tubes too, but for me it´s the SED´s that make "the tone"!       .................

cheers, "ACY"

Yeah try the Ruby BSTR's I have them in my VH4S and it sounds huge. However IMO not Marshall like, but then again I have not played a marshall in 10 years :D not like the IMO muddyness of a boogie recto, but just thumps and deep ark cleans. But for some reason in the Herby with the 6l6's that came with it, the cleans with mid cuts at noon, sound like a ENGL SE clean. Verrrrry bright and crisp.

I have to add a +1 to the SED EL34's, nice and tight and they still thump IMO.

yes 6l6 is def bright n crisp toooooooooooo much so.Miss those 34's.When I first got itherb was darker and meaner sounding, not muddy but the dist was warm and saturated.

I dunno man, I am caught between advice and what I heard today. Meaning I was jamming on it practicing new songs, and the Over drive on channel 3 was just brootal. and of course the clean nazi I am, with a boss super chorus in the loop, and mid cut on it sounded slammin. i wish I had direct mic comparisons of the herbert with EL34's and 6l6's :(

I got two 6l6's and 4 el34's goin in herbert and it sounds EPIC!!!
all 6l6's sounded to nice and pure
All el34's sounded a little too middy for me
This combination ROCKS to the max!!!

Why not run both? I have 4 SED Winged C EL34s and 2 SED Winged C 6L6s in my Herbert. The growl is there, still dark and warm sounding, but it's got some great clarity too which is probably enhanced by the 6L6s. If I had to go all of one or the other, it would be EL34s though. And the SED Winged C are a great recommendation.
