Hey all. I am setting up a smaller rig to use with my 2nd band, and had some questions that I hope someone can answer.

I am about to purchase an Axess Electonics MFC5 MIDI footcontroller.

This unit will work with my Herbert just fine for switching channels and so forth but it doesn't have loops for pedals, per se.

That's OK with me b/c I won't be needing any effects except a delay pedal. What I'd like to achieve is to have a solo patch that will utilize channel 3 with the delay. So I would think that the switchable loop serves this purpose, but am not clear exactly how to hook it up. I saw a thread where Peter stated to use the switchable send and the serial return. Is this what I'm after?

I don't need a real feature-laden delay, so was thinking I would try to get the most bang for the buck - just want to find a decent delay time and leave it. Any recommendations regarding a unit that will work well in a loop as opposed to in front of the amp? I was thinking that I'd just set the delay on top of my amp/cabinet, to keep it off the floor, since I won't be messing with any settings live.

Thanks so very much in advance for any/all assistance,

Stu

My VH4 has insert loops for each channel. But, I believe the Herbert has a switchable channel insert assignable to any channel. Either way, you just need two short instrument cables to put the delay in the channel insert (send to in and return to out). Select channel 3 and assign the loop to it from the amp (and turn the delay on), then select which programmable assignment you want to activate it on the controller. Switch the loop off on the amp and assign clean channel 3 to another assignment on the controller to run the channel clean, without delay. Any delay will do. I find the Boss DD3 as good as any of them.

One of the Herbert guys may want to elaborate more.....

Delay in to Switchable Send
Delay out to Switchable Return
Turn delay "on".

program a patch with the channel for lead (say ch3) and additionally engage the switchable loop - store - done.
Of course you can also use ch3 without the loop/delay.

The switchable loop is serial, so adjust the "level" of the delay.

For a suggestion: how long is your desired delay time? If it is 300-400ms I'd go with a simple analogue unit. They do sound a bit less cold (esp. in the serial loop) than digitqal devices, although there are digital units available which emulate the sound of analogue units.

Olaf, Steve,

Thanks very much for your prompt and thorough responses!

Olaf, yeah, I'm thinking 3-400ms is about right. I have been thinking more and more about analog delays actually. I thought the MXR looked interesting, and was priced reasonably. Is it clear that I can use any delay in this loop without regard for line/instrument level outputs.

This is something that I've always been unclear of

I have no experience with the MXR, just saw/heard clips, which were cool.
The Artec stuff is "good" - you know, its a philosophy thing - you can spend hundreds for a pedal - or 50 bucks. I myself like the cheaper stuff - as long as it is reasonable.
From the "everyday" stuff (digital) I like the Digitech better than the Boss DD3.

Most online stores have a money back thing, so just try 2/3 delays to find out what fits your needs the best. Have an eye on their power consumption and run them off a sufficient power supply (ampêres),

I think it would be best to get a few and try them out as you suggest Olaf.

How much consideration do I need to make for line/instrument levels when using the loop? Is this just a tone issue, or can I damage something if I'm not careful?

Stu

I have the MXR carbon copy and use it in the switchable loop, very nice. Their are better as far as the depth/quality of the sound but if all you need is one delay sound it's hard to go wrong with it.

I can't remember the routing ATM, but you can set it up either series or parallel. I think you send from the swichable out and return Parallel or series, depending on which one you want.
