Hermansson Recto x GZA Hellion

Couldn't find a way to make these sound good with a DI+IRs, so here's a shitty phone clip instead. I've had the Hellion for about a year, just got the Hermansson a couple months ago, and find I'm gravitating towards using them both for the same type of stuff.

Jackson Pro Dinky w/ JB played in Drop B through a Mesa V30 + Celestion Alnico Cream.

Settings for those that are interested, curious what others with these amps are using. Haven't been super psyched with what I'm dialing in for the recto at the moment.

Nice! I have a hellion and Hermansson recto and love them both. I find my Hermansson to be very cabinet dependent. Some of the settings also can be pretty extreme (example cranking the gain and tightness, because the gain saturation is necessary for it not to get choked)

You're not really using those settings on the Hellion right ? Master @ 10 gains @ 8.5 and 10?!

Did you get another Hellion? This one I actually got from you lol, sent it to Jeremy for circuit updates though.

I don't love the Hermansson with a V30 but was too lazy to swap speakers in this clip. Agreed on needing to crank the gain. Finding I need to crank the presence to remove the blanket from it though.

Ahahah so the master on the rear is set to like 2, got that tip from Jeremy and love the extra saturation that method provides.

Gain Trim I find darkens the amp a bit and I prefer things brighter so I leave it maxed.

But preamp gain... yeah, crank that shit. I've been experimenting with that and the gain style (diodes) a lot this week, sometimes I have them both lower. Almost certainly don't need this much gain but still sounds good to me.

Also have an Arcane Powerdozer in the mail which will probably impact how I dial this in gain wise as well.

Haha that's right! I did. The only three amps I re-bought were a Hermansson Recto, Moab, and hellion.

I do not like the Hermansson through a mesa v30. I ran one through the metal half-back cab loaded with Mesa v30's and it sounded goofy...but I really like it through the Marshall MF280 V30 (which is a rebranded Hellatone 60L in 16 ohm). I usually like really bright tones so I think it is a amp/head pairing more than a taste thing. The Marshall V30 does not sound like the Mesa v30, it is a darker speaker and setup, but it makes the Hermansson sit well, allows you to run it hard without being abrasive, and sounds very modern but in a pleasing way. Oddly I liked it with a greenback/v30 combo in another cab.

I like the hellion a lot - the hermansson, not so much, but I get why other people like it.

Those mode 4 cabs are monstrous sounding holy crap.

For sure! The Hellion is great and Jeremy has a killer ear. The feature set is so hard to beat. Love the Mode Four cabs...they're highly underrated and have a really amazing sound that does metal without just being another Mesa cab. Really awesome alternative. I have 2 and would love to find a Minty straight cab.

I really like the Hermansson here over the hellion but its personal preferences and also it can be hard to record some amps with a cell phone. Abaddon just struggles to get top end clarity captured because the low end is forcing phone mic compressors to clamp extremely hard.

Yup. They both can get super percussive but the overall voicing is super different still.
I liked the Hermansson better in this clip. I wonder what the default setting of the bright and mid switch is, when the amp doesn't have them.
Probably whatever he hardwires them :)

Those are really unique settings on the Hellion haha. You can get some serious thickness, punch and clarity with less gain

I feel like I have all the switches set to the tightest I can and then have to compensate by adding back more bass.

I'm still not sure which gain style position I like best as well.
