Does James Hetfield play a VH4 with EL 34 ore one with 6550?
What do you mean...? Is his Sound more Diezel oriented or rather to the Mesa Mark IIC+?
Thank you

Hetfield was playing a VH4 before the switch to 6550's. But I'll bet he's not using the original set of tubes by know, so only he and his tech will know what they put in there :)

Not sure about right now, but in 06, 07, and before that it was EL34's.

Where from do you have the information?
I believe you have co-operated somtimes on tour, right?

James is using EL 34 tubes in his VH4's. He likes the 6550's sound and feel of the amp but didn't want to switch over to them until the tour is over...which I understand his thinking regarding this.

Has he ever used 6550s before (in other amps)? If not then I can totally understand his reluctance to change a working formula while on tour.

I don't know this answer for certain, he didn't tell us and we didn't ask....lol. He liked the VH4 with 6550's in it a lot but like I said, his rig is all set up with EL-34's so for now he will finish the tour like that. My thinking is that he will eventually switch out. Stay tuned and we will report back about this later on.

Yeah, I worked for Metallica/Metclub on and off for some time.

Hetfield is using 2 VH4´s in combination with MESA
I refurbished one of his touring amps in Munich and Stuttgart http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/ind...ID=101827329&albumID=2629219&imageID=43757824
I was honored to be intorduced to Mr. Hetfield and I could spend around 30 minutes with him in the tuning room. I dropped off a hemp cone cabinet, a frontloaded V30 and a VH4 with 6550´s.
He liked the VH4 a lot. The team around the band is amazing and I must say, I never have seen such a professional team before!!!!
Hetfield was using his reference cabinet and it seems that he´s really into the old British worn out V30´s.
Later on we walked through the Diezel cabinets and records have been made with all different configuration. Later on we sat in front of the SSL console which is on tour all the time and we listened to the pro tools tracks. So many results after 30 minutes. James did not loose a minute, he just played all setups and we barely talked. It was highly efficient!
As there are uncountable supervisors and workers, it is too dangerous to change the setup completely during the tour. I left one amp as it was before and put in original pre amp tubes in the other one. I did not swap the power tubes as there was no time to burn them in and it would have changed the voicing too much.
Let´s see if the 6550´s VH4 will be used for the next record. It´s definitely not used on tour this time!
This band and team is so busy that I barely find an opportunity to work on the other 4 VH4´s which are in different places.

I guess he´s using Line 6 preamps for the clean sounds, but I am not sure. And yes he´s using MESA at the same time.

I always love how people assume shit when they dont know a dam thing......then the truth comes out and they are fkn way off....losers!

I think it's way cool that we get this kind of great insider info. Thx for sharing Peter!

PEter, how do you think his tone is mixed like? 50/50 (diezel/mesa) or is the tone favoring the Diezel?

what other things did you noticed about his rig/tone/diezels that you could share with us fans?
