Hollow Body Pickup Recommendations

I'm building a Warmoth L5S hollow body guitar w/ 2 F holes. (It's a oversized Les Paul "type" shaped guitar, that has been hollowed out a lot. (here are the specs http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/bodies/vintage.cfm?fuseaction=l5s ).

The body is going to be Mahogany back and flame maple top. The neck and fingerboard will be unfinished Brazilian Rosewood. I would like the neck to have a warm, smooth, juicy tone that's full but not boomy or too mushy on the low end. I would like the bridge pickup to be warm, smooth, but with a bit more "bite" and spank to it.

I'm thinking of putting a Suhr SSV in the bridge and a Suhr DSV in the neck. Any comments or recommendations on those pickup choices for that guitar / wood? Where is the best place to get Suhr pickups? Indoor Storm I know does carry them. I would like to get them with chrome covers.

I'm also open to other pickup recommendations though :).

Wow, thats quite the project! Ive built some Warmoth stuff in the past, excellent quality! Low output humbuckers work really well in big hollow bodies, those Suhr pickups would be great I think, cant go wrong with the SSV/DSV set. Also, a different route that is really really cool in a hollow body is the Fralin P-92. It sounds like a single coil/humbucker hybrid. When you play mellow, it has a really cool clear humbucker quality, and when you dig in it behaves slightly single coil-ish.

I love all of my Warmoth stuff. I have a Warmoth strat, a soloist, a bass, and 2-3 other necks from them. I love EVERY guitar I've built from them. (And that's probably in upwards of 15-17 guitars. Some I am glad I parted with, and some I am not!

I'll check out that Fralin P-92. I figured the Suhrs would be a killer setup though. They are top in the running ;).

Ive got an extra bridge P-92 I could send you to try out if ya want. If you like it, awesome, if not you can just send it back. I was saving for a future LP, but Im thinkin I just wanna buy some modules instead. ;)

PM with your shipping info if you are interested. :)

very nice :)

I like Classic 57's a lot on my gibson... that might be too run of the mill for you though..

that would look good with a Bisgby too

I had thought of putting a Bigsby on it, but decided to have another hard tail :). I have like 9 electrics, and only one right now has a hard tail :). That's my Heritage LP. So I am going to do the same on this one!

I'm really intrigued by the Bareknuckle pickups at this point. I've emailed Tim (the owner) to ask his recommendations. I'm thinking a Mule in the bridge / Stormy Monday in the neck.

Going to put a 3-way switch in it on the right horn. I will see if I can do a 4-pot setup around the F-hole. If I can, I will be putting in 4-500K pots in it with a normal LP style wiring setup. If not, I will try a 3-knob setup w/ 1 Vol & 2 tones. If that doesn't work then, a normal Master Vol / Master Tone will do.

Just ordered a set of Bareknuckle nickle covered Stormy Monday pickups. I think it's gonna kick some major bootay!!!

If I don't like those, then I will probably go w/ the TV Jones Filtertron pickups. I think I'm gonna dig the Bareknuckles though. All the clips I've heard are pretty much the tone I'm after w/ this guitar!

I have Suhr pups in 3 of my guitars and absolutely love them. I put an SSV and an SSV+ in my Les Paul and it rocks. Becuase they are not the hottest, they have tone for days (and I can still get a very meaty tone with plenty of gain from my MOD50).

George at Acme Guitars does all of my wiring harnesses and pickups: http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/

2 things.... he'll add quick-connects if you ask him - makes no-solder changes very quick. He also did a special push/pull tone control so I can split the front pup... sounds great! ...woody and juicy. Great prices and smokin' service - highly recommended.

BTW, there is only a slight difference between the DSV (double row of screws) and the SSV (single row of screws, single row of slugs). I have both - I like the DSV(H) when playing higher gain stuff, and SSV(H) for everything else (my personal favorite for the extra top end)... also, covers are available on SSV only. Hope this helps - good luck on the project!
