I just got some new pre amp tubes for my Egnater Renegade 212 combo and a quad of Penta KT88's and shame on Bruce and company for not shipping the Renegade stock with these tubes! :gethim:

The new preamp tubes were nice and all, but the new KT88's stole the show! I wish I had a way to record some decent clips (all I have is an iPhone) but the bottom end is deeper and a lot tighter with KT88's vs EL34 or 6L6's and the top end is very sweet and full with no harshness at all.

If you have the money, get at least a pair of KT88's and mix them with your 6L6s or EL34s. You won't be disappointed!

did you have to remove the tube retainer clips, to fit the tubes?

Yep! The base of the KT88's are too big to work with the stock retainers so they had to come out. I've ordered some specific retainers from the tube store to keep 'em place.

Can you still use retainer clips, only a bigger size? Do they even make retainer clips big enough for KT88s/6650s? Or do you have to use those retainers with the springs on them?

I bought a quartet of these from the tube store:

They seem like they'd do a good job of keeping them from bouncing around during transport. One thing to mention is there's very little room between the fan and the farthest KT88 on the right... Hopefully I'll never smell melting plastic as the tubes obviously get quite hot!
