Was reading the local FB gear group and it was brought up that these are built by taking an actual Jet City PCB, modding it then putting it in a new enclosure with a different brand name. Can anyone confirm this?

yeah i think that is pretty widely known. they sound great though and are pretty cheap used. i had the 20 watter and loved it. i would like to get the 50 or 100 watt version next.

But why not mod the existing amp. I don't get the rebranding

i am not sure. it says they are recycled amps on his website. to me they dont sound like a jet city at all so maybe he didn't want people thinking it was just a better jet city. he does re tolex them with new knobs and you can get mercury mag transformers too if you want. i know jack shit about modding amps but its def not a slightly tweaked jet city, it really is a way different sound. does the fuzzy doomy matamp sunn stuff really well and it was waaaaaaaaay louder than any other 20 watt amp i have ever heard.

These amps always catch my eye when perusing ebay, reverb etc...

He doesn't mod amps. He rebuilds amps in the style of Matamp by reusing the head shell, chassis, and whatever components. It's kinda like finding an old frame at the junkyard and building a hot rod with spare parts and an engine. The difference being, given the Jet City, they are starting with a Ford Taurus.
