How can I tame ch4 on my VH4?

I love the sound of channel 4, but the gain control is way too sensitive. I cant just get a gradual increase it seems. Once the dial gets past 9 o'clock its just overkill and feeds back very easily.....is there a way I can 'calm' it down a bit and 'loosen up the channel a bit at the same time (i.e a little less compression)?

I wonder if trying a lower gain preamp tube (like a 12at7 or 12au7) in one of the preamp slots might help a lot.
