How can I get rid of some compression on my VH4? I've been using my strat with low output single coils, and it works great, but still...is there a preamp tube that'll help with that?

Back off the gain some and open up the volume.

You could try lower gain pre-amp tubes but that will change your tone. 5751's maybe?

yeah, I mean without killing everyone of course.

I was more or less asking because I read a comment Peter made a while back saying there are ways around getting rid of some compression. As we know Diezel amps are naturally compressed, and I like that too, but wanted to make this head as flexible as possible. So if I could get rid of some compression by swapping preamp tubes or whatnot, I'd like to know which ones, or how to do it? :)

Running the global volume on a VH4 above 1:00 will start to kick in power tube saturation.
If you use this with a lower gain setting on a given channel and open up the channel volumes a bit, this will offer you different tones.

By using higher gain settings, you are simply running the preamp tubes in that channel hotter, with more saturation and therefore are likely to get more compression from that channel.

Peter knows best, of course  . I am only telling you from my personal experience what I have done.
I know that using weaker preamp tubes will allow you to turn the gain on the channel affected by the weaker pre amp tube up more because it is putting out less then the 12AX7 does. Of course this lowers the amount of saturation on the higher side that this preamp tube will give you, but the amp seems to breather more, from my experiences.

I prefer being able to mix the power tube saturation with the preamp tube saturation a bit to blend in the tone I am seeking from the amp. The VH4 does this so well, it isn't funny.

No one hears their amp the same as another person hears it. What may work for me, may not work for others.

Give Peter an email, and let the master enlighten you. No one will know more then Peter will.

thank you Peter, email sent!

Stephen, thanks for the advice I already do the high master low volume thing which I learnt from you! :)

I was just curious as what can be done about this from Peter's perspective since he commented on that a while back :D

its a mod to the board - it was me who asked this a few weeks ago .

Fuck that, just turn that master up!  I'm telling you, once you pass that point it's like a different amp. The reason I didn't keep the VH4, Joey, was because I simply often couldn't be that loud for that great sound. But you swear by the VH4, so turn that thing up! I haven't heard an amp as transparent as the VH4 once you get it there & not compressed at all, even the Herbert can't do it.

heheeh will do soon. I have my own studio space back home, in a month and a half I'm there again. But I'll try the Peter Mod too
