How do you get your Herbert to cut through?

...without it sounding harsh?
The main reason i bought my herbert besides the fact that it sounds awesome is so i can finnally cut through the mix. I play with the worlds loudest drummer who intentionally hits as hard as he possibly can :aww:
With that said im looking to have a warm sound but still cut through. I can easily cut through but it will sound hash and unwelcoming to the ears.
My ideal tone would be a cross between Eric Johnson (which ive dialed in very well) and John Petrucci. Im curious as to how high you set your volumes..etc.
I keep my channel volumes at 12 noon, my master 1 at 10 oclock and my master 2 at 11 oclock.
Im also learning that mids are the key to tone AND volume.
Channel 2's mids are at 11 oclock with mid cut on half the time.
Channel 3's mids are at 2:30 for that E. Johnsonish tone. My treble though on both channels is at like 10 oclock. And my Prescence is VERY low at less than 9 oclock. I dont like a harsh tone that has too much bite.
Thoughts suggestions etc.
Im worried about cranking the volume too high and overstressing the amp. Can it really handle being CRANKED?! (past 12 oclock on masters)

Hey there,

The Herbert can ABSOLUTELY handle the masters at noon. :D No problem. With the mid-cut on, I may bump the mids up to noon or one on channel two, it always helped me be heard, without resorting to just volume. I also usually dial the bass back to 10 or eleven o'clock. Worked pretty well for me.

By the way, try the presence up a bit if you're running the treble low. What cab are you running through? I don't find noon on both treble and presence to be harsh at all, but we all have different ears

hey dude i like the same types of tones you do. here is what works for me for leads. ch 3 of course. presence up a little, dont worry herbie wont get dark. try 1 or 2 o clock. then treble down around 9 or ten o clock. mids at 2:30 bass at noon. and here is my secret, mid cut on with intensity really low like 8:30 or 9:00. i too play with a loud drummer and you need a bit more presence when trying to cut with this amp. remember petrucci runs presence almost off BUT that is a boogie not a diezel, boogies (i know i had a mark iv for years) have a very harsh high and must be pulled out in presence then compensated on treble and graphic eq, diezels don't share this frequency. just my 2 cents. good luck
and remember to adjust settings with the drummer playing.

The F.Loaded may work better...I use either a Bogner 4x12, or a VHT Fat bottom, depending on what I'm going for. The Bogner is very smooth, the VHT very in your face.

I honestly didn't love my Diezel 4x12r with the 30's. It had a harsh middy thing going on (to my ears).

Looks like they've made some speaker changes in the new cabs.

Edit : This is about noon on all, presence and treble at one or two. Bogner cab.

Thanks man, we do indeed have the same taste in tone. I will try this and see how it works for me. WHat are your Volumes at though..?

ch volume around 2:00 for some added amp compression on lead and master to taste as every venue is different. hope this helps.

I agree that the cab will make a difference. I use two with my Herbert. A Soldano quad, front loaded v30's or a Bogner o/s 2x12, v30's. The Bogner cab delivers smooth full rounded tone while the Soldano is more a harsher, tighter, high mid tone. Mostly I prefer the Soldano bite. Either sounds great, just depends on where you want the guitar to sit in the mix.
