Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Cordless Drills

A best electric drill is the centerpiece of any workman’s toolbox. Useful for many different purposes and is incredibly versatile, your arsenal of power tools will be incomplete without one of these.

But for many people who have just picked up power drills for the first time, it can be very intimidating to try and get to know it. It’s loud and it promises injury if handled incorrectly. Worse, with technical terms like “no-load speed”, “spindle lock”, and “amp/hours” flying around, it may feel like you would have to take an engineering course to figure out how to use it.

In this article, we’ll be addressing some of the common questions that new cordless drill users often have about this piece of equipment.

What Is the “No-load Speed”?

Power drills
’ speed is measured using RPM (rotations per minute,) with each complete, 360-degree rotation of the drill’s chuck being counted as one rotation.

When your best power drill is driving down a screw or punching a hole through a slab of material, the drill’s RPM will lower due to resistance. The harder the material and the higher the resistance, and the more drastic this RPM-reducing effect will be on your drill (metal will slow down your drill’s RPM more than hardwood, for example.)

No-load speed is the RPM your drill can achieve when it’s doing nothing. Pick up your drill, clamp down on the trigger and let the chuck spins without forcing it to do anything, measure that speed and that’s the no-load speed.

Higher no-load speed means more power being applied to the material when you drill and the less drastic the effect of resistance on your drill would be.

What Is A Spindle Lock?

The spindle lock anchors down the chuck so that you can safely switch out the drill bit. When the lock is active, the chuck and the drill bit are physically prevented from moving.

Changing the bit without a spindle lock can cause inadvertent injury if you’re not careful or inexperienced, so always have the spindle lock on just to be safe. Modern-day drills are all equipped with automatic spindle locks anyway, so don’t worry too much about this. The lock will activate by itself when the trigger is released. Be careful, though, since many professional cordless drills have manual spindle locks that have to be engaged by the user. If you’re still new to cordless drill and hasn’t had a lot of experience just yet, we recommend you to steer clear from this type.

What’s Amp/Hour And What’s the Ideal Battery Life?

Battery capacity is measured by amp/hour. The more amp/hour the battery has, the longer the drill will be able to work.

for a long period of time, such as for extensive home improvement or engineering projects, it’s best that you find a drill with a sizable battery. But if you seldom use your drill and even when you do pick it up, you’d only use it for a few minutes at most, save some money by investing into a drill with a low amp/hour rating to save a couple bucks.

One alternative you can opt for is buying extra Lithium Ion batteries to boost your run time. When one cell depletes, just switch in a new one and you’re good as new! Usually, this approach can save a teeny bit more money than getting a drill with a bulky battery.

Welcome to Rig-Talk and your amps will be fine.

Now, if an amp sat around for say 20 years, I'd personally give it a good look over first.
