How loud do you think Edward was allowed to be if they were recording live in this room for VH1?

Its performance space is 38ft by 18ft and has a height of 12ft. The adjoining control room is equipped with a Frank DeMedio custom API-550 console, this room measures 21ft by 16ft and is 10ft high. There is a smaller piano room 15ft by 9ft housing a 1906 Steinway B7 grand piano.

could it be what's missing for those trying to emulate EVH early tones? ?

I watched an Angus Young rig rundown and his tech said he uses it for the sound, not just a wireless IIRC.
 
I think Mike Soldano did a rough estimate that the variac Marshalls put out about 40W. Still blisteringly loud, of course, but maybe not blowing out the windows like a straight-up 1959 would.

I just watched a Fryette video where they variac'd Dave Friedman's favorite Marshall and it came down to the same ballpark, about 50W, so sounds about right. And yeah, stupendously loud.
