How many of you are using preamps?

What are you looking for recommendations for? Just overall good preamps? Or are you shooting for a specific tone/styling? If you want versatility, Egnater M4, and it's good for all styles. If you want really tight, metal tones, try to find a VHT GP3, or wait until they re-release it 1st quarter of next year.

Sorry, didn't think to specify my style of playing  Though to a degree I'd just like to know some of the best preamps for different applications, I'm playing through a Herbert bear in mind though.

I play generally kind of like Muse - brilliant smooth clean/acoustic like tones + really powerful big chord work on the distortion side of things, my main concerns are a tight tight tone + utter clarity.

Is there other ways of using preamps in a rig other than hotplates by the way?

Right now I have a Quad, Studio and a Black Tiger, which Peter has built. Thru Herberts loop it sounded - well - like a Herbert :D

OK. Hold up. You can't just nonchalantly mention that, yes, I have a few preamps, and one that goes by the name "Black Tiger" and is 'I'm assuming now" the only custom made preamp made by Peter Diezel in all the world. Details and photos? Where do I sign up for one? ;)

Its not for sale. It is a proto of a project Peter and I wanted to do with the DIY amp community, but we didn't find the time . . .

Here's a vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL2_kfUFvC8
Towards the end (1:40) of the vid I added too much gain, so it gets a bit muddy - my fault . . .

Thank you for posting the clip. I am disappointed that you will not be marketing this preamp. It would be a welcomed addition to the guitar preamp world. Oh, nice playing by the way.

I'm pretty sure that one day Peter will release something like this - his problem is (being a perfectionist as he is), that he needs to build also a poweramp which will react like Herbert's powersection to achieve the full sonic abilities of a preamp. Both units will take time - also IMO (not sure what Peter thinks about it, I guess he would agree) Fryette's poweramps are very very cool - and would be cool also with a Diezel Preamp.

But first there will be Schmidt and then Hagen and then XXX and then maybe Lucy and then then . . .

Its still a very small company, we should keep that in mind.

Thanks for listening to my crappy vid btw. :)

Wow, how interesting but obviously of course Peter won't sell it yet, Peter as ever doesn't seem to be interested in making anything that's 'nearly' as good as it could be.
