hey everybody!! as you can tell by the title, this is about tubes.

Ever since i bought my diezel vh4 less than a year ago, and i've yet to getting around to changing the tubes. so i thought this would be the right time to change them. i'm right now running my vh4 with svetlana el34s. personally, i want to tighten up the bass a little more because i'm currently using the amp to play a lot of down tuned metal songs. (you're def right if you think i'm using ch.3 and 4 a lot lol) btw i think it would be important to say, i'm not one of those who scoops the mids, i understand that my tone is in my mids, so i have them set past 12 o'clock.

so i want to hear about what tubes you have in you amp, who are they made by, what you like about them, what you don't, what's you favorite and for what they're good for, any suggestions, the whole nine yards.

lastly, would it be a good time to also change my pre-amp tubes?

thanx guys

Eric,

Cool to see a Diezel guy asking Egnater guys for advice. :)

For your downtuned chuggachugga, I would suggest Sovtek 6550's for aggressive tone + reasonable price, then followed by JJ 6L6's. (killer tubes)

I'm not exactly sure what the range of usable tubes is for your amp, so 6550's MIGHT not work at all.

Personally, I player smoother stuff, and enjoy JJ E34L's. I also like the Russian GC3G (I think that's the number). It's pretty much like a Sovtek 5881, but a little older.

I like all tubes though. I have some Dutch Hammond EL84's in my Mesa Blue Angel. I have JJ 6V6's in one of my Egnater seminar heads, and it sounds very old-school. Kills with a Gretsch and an outboard reverb.

I'd also look at 6550's. Right now I've been using the either Sovtek or Svetlana 6550's in my rig for years. The thing about 6550's is they have tons of headroom, handle lower tuning for metal very very well, and have a midrange to die for. Its sweet, buttery, and very present in the mix. For other areas it works great. I use it in my VHT 2/90/2 and use a Egnater M4, and every module I've ever put up to it sounds amazing. Really allows all types of tones to be present, and let the preamp really voice your sound. What I've not liked about other power amps w/ EL34's and 6L6's, is that when you crank them, they start to mess with the tone you are getting from the preamp. Me personally, I prefer to have most of my tone come from the preamp, and the power amp color it well (with good midrange, tight lows, and sparkling highs), but as I increase volume, keep the tone the same throughout. 6550's are the only tube to date that I have been able to do that with. KT88 are harsh to me, and KT77's sound good in some amps. EL34's sound good if you want more of your tone from the power section, and 6L6's to me are very mushy in the midrange.

Anyways, that's my $.02 for what its worth!
