I believe my tubes have gone down...

I was playing my Einstein just now and I got a somewhat spluttering sound, sounded like if you were to pull the cable from the guitar under high gain or something. Changed cables and I'm basically getting nothing. Well, I am if I crank the volume, but it's very, very quiet. Checked the back of the amp, and sure enough, the tube LED was lit. This is the 50w version btw.

So, I put in some Mesa EL34s I had lying around to check, and it's the same scenario, but I'm guessing this is because I haven't replaced the fuse aswell? All should be well when I do right?

So what fuse do I need exactly, and where do I get it? Also, any particular EL34s you guys can recommend?

Ah yes. The fuse is black.

So, what causes that? Could be anything to do with tubes right? I suppose they're just like that. I think I remember some tubes just literally dying in a Recto of mine, for no apparent reason.

So, ordered some new fuses and a pair of Winged C EL34s. Roll on Friday.

Then you can mod the amp in between.

Good plan. I can't say I didn't shit my pants for a second when I hear that sound...

hehe, I'd have shat my pants for sure.

damn too bad this happened to your new amp, but you'll have it back running full speed at no time

Yeah, was working fine all day long, then bam, nothing. Having the master at half and only getting TV volume is pretty funny.

I'm curious as to the inner workings of this. Basically, is the dead fuse preventing the amp from making a connection to the power tubes or something thus I'm getting no volume? I'm curious as to what happens when a tube set goes down.

Absolutely, thats why the fuse makes more than sense - it protects the amp from damage. So I hope you've ordered more than just one, its always good to have some spare fuses around.

I'd order some spare power tubes too. My Diezels, especially the Herbert, blow power tubes very often, it takes some time to find a set that lasts for a while.

Very often as in Once a year, or very often as in every few months.?? I'll keep that in mind. I have no idea as to how to change the tubes in this or take the head apart to do it. I was always under the impression i was supposed to take it to a dealer..etc..

The set that was in the Herbert originally lasted for about 2 years, after that the fun began. I went through at least 4 sets within the 2008. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

What!!!? Thats a lot of money bro! Somethings gotta be wrong there. Is there anything in an amp that can cause tubes to blow? There must be some explanation for that. You dont just go through 4 sets of tubes in one year like that....

Honestly, man, that's what my initial thought was, I thought it had to be an issue with the amp, but the set I have in it right now has been there for a while & has been working flawlessly & sounds incredible. Come to think of it, the regular light bulbs at my place have the same life pattern, some of them die really quickly, others work for years.
