My full post of the Joe Bonamassa concert is here:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=56470

But...I'm just in a numb state here. I had SOOOOOO much fun last night. That concert was amazing. Totally makes me rethink my guitar gear. At least for bluesy stuff. Mod50 / Mod100 with a Silver Jubilee...sounds like a killer idea to me!! Put the Silver Jubilee on my Eggie 4x12 cab w/ M75s...and my Mod50 on my Eggie 4x10...with the COD module and BMAN module. That'd be some SERIOUS tone. I see a Silver Jubilee or clone in my future...yeah. I do miss that amp. That's one amp I truly regret selling.

But damn...Probably one of the best...tightest bands I've seen. It was an emotional rollercoaster...that was just pure showmanship, soul, and tone! He's SOOOOO much better live than on CD. The emotion he puts out on stage is just amazing. Definitely the best concert...EVER! And that's some pretty high standards too. I've been to a LOT of great concerts in my life. His was simple...and just so damn deep with emotion and soul.

Wow...Damn...I'm speechless..and friggin amazed...:)

Joe is such an amazing musician and singer. Very soulfull. Don't understand why he's not a huge star.

He says the Silver Jubilee is the best master volume amp Marshall ever made. I can't disagree with him - his tone is always great no matter what he plays. On his gear vids on Youtube, he says the Jubilee is always on and mixed with one of his other three amps. A Two Rock, Category 5 and Van Weelden

Totally agree man. I totally miss the 2 Silver Jubilees I used to own. I see one of those again in my arsenal. Best Master Volume I've ever owned...that's for sure. I'm considering putting together a Ceriatone 2555...well just buying a pre-made chassis w/o PT, OT, and choke and sending it to Trace @ Voodoo Amps for some Mercury Magnetics love and care ;)

That way I can get me a Silver Jubilee tone w/o breaking the bank. Since most SJ's are selling for like $1750- 2500 nowadays.

Eric

That's cool Eric, the Ceriatone's are really good and very affordable. I almost bought a Overtone Special from Nick recently. Great guy to deal with. Only backed out because my COD is so good and very close in sound.

I would love to see how well our SL2x goes up against a real Jubilee. Can you describe from memory how they're similar?

Yeah. That was my plan. Build a affordable clone of the 2555 100W head.

The SL2X does get close, but there's just something to the Silver Jubilee that I've not been able to capture yet w/ it. I think it's just the grind of the power section in how it differs from the Egnater stuff. Not saying the Eggie stuff is bad at all...thats DEFINITELY not the case. I love my eggie gear for sure!! :) I just want that Silver Jubilee tonage. Only true way to get it is get the head..or have one built. Get upgraded trannies and choke..vs the stock Drake ones...and I'll be in even better heaven. Trace @ Voodoo Amps has done a LOT of work on Silver Jubilees in the past for older GNR and newer GNR, as well as others. So I know he can get the Ceriatone where I want it. And all said and done...I'll probably save 500-700 dollars off buying a used one.

Eric

Eric, I bet with the Ceriatone and Trace, you will have a bad ass machine!! Can't wait to hear about it man.

Yeah, Joe is just ridiculous man.........just an unreal talent. Glad you enjoyed the show.

if you haven't picked up his new Royal Albert Hall Lived DVD I'd definitely recommend it. Great show. They've got it available for audio download on iTunes too. Love his version of Just Got Paid. His guitar tone is unreal. One of the best of his generation.

Good for you Eric!

Joe's tone is amazing. I remember seeing him on a foreign talk show play and my jaw hit the floor. A friend of mine finally after much tone searching ended up with a Silver Jubilee combo and 212 cab as his main gigging rig and people are saying it is his best tone ever. I believe it is one channel though and no effects loop? Maybe I am thinking of his JCM800.

What about the stock SL2, maybe that is closer to the Silver Jubilee. After all, Joe's tone is thick and warm, which to me is more like the stock SL2.

Eric, I hate you. :D

I saw Jonny Lang a few weeks back and felt the same way that you did about Bonamassa. There's something really special about seeing a truly talented and tasteful guitarist work his craft. I hope to see Bonamassa some day, too.

Having owned 2-3 Silver Jubilees.. I can tell you the stock SL2 is nowhere close to the Silver Jubilees. The tone coming from the Silver are thick and warm...but they ahve a lot more bite to them...and a lot tighter low end. The Silvers are closer to a SL2X. That was the intent of the SL2X...was to get as close as possible in a module to a Silver Jubilee. That's what Jeff and I talked about.

It did get rather close...but the difference in power sections really is where the rest of the differences in tone come from.

If it was one channel and had no effects loop, it probably was a JCM800. The Silvers all were 2 channels with a series effects loop...that is PRE-EQ. Loved that design, as you could use the tone stack (Bass, Mids, Treble) if you used the Silver Jubilee as a power section, and used a different preamp going into it. I had all of my JCM800s modded to do have a "pre-eq" return to them, when I used them as a power amp.

Not saying Jeff didn't create a great module in the SL2X...I just want that "Silver Jubilee" tone...tis why I'm building a Silver Jubilee clone from Ceriatone. Except...I'm putting Mercury Magnetic OT / PT / choke in the clone vs the crappy Drakes. My last Silver I had upgraded to MM's OT / PT...and damn..did it totally spank the shit out of the Drakes. Hence why I'm not buying an old Silver and having it modded. Much cheaper to create a clone myself to the specs I want.

eric, thank you for the explanation. I never owned one so I thank you for the insight my friend. I do like the SL2X but need to use it with the band to get the real deal in how it responds live. If it is better than the SL2, I may make the EG3/4 conversion as well. Having the EQ in the loop really helps me shape my lead tone no matter how much bite, treble, etc is on my rhythm tone.

I checked with my buddy, he has a Silver Jubilee 212 combo and a late 80s JCM 800. I can't afford to get a Jubilee now so I will have to live with my lovely Mod 50. Still the best amp I have owned.

Closest I got to owning a Jubilee was using the Jubilee model on the Line Vetta I used to own. That sounded great but the lows were far from tight, LOL! :) Good 'ol L6.

My Mod50 / Mod100 / m4 are definitely the best amps I've owned to date. There's just that one amp I let get away. I paid $800 for a 2553 Silver about 5-6 years ago. Thanks to Joe Bonamassa for running up the prices on them now! Now a 2555 goes from $1800 or higher. Not worth it in my honest opinion. It is an amazing amp though...I'd rather buy a PT100 if I got into those types of $$$.

My issue with a Marshall like this would be it being a one trick pony as a friend pointed out. Great trick, but I get bored if that is all the head does. that is why I like the Egnater so much. Luckily I like the Egnater tone. No matter what anyone says all the Egnater modules still have a characteristic Egnater sound so it isn't 100% like having different amps....just different variations on the same amp I guess. There is overlap. I think I would prefer to have a VHT before the Jubilee due to the versatility. If the Jubilee does it for you, go for it though, GREAT amp no doubt.

Never been fond of VHT at all outside of their power amps. The Jubilee is not really a "one-trick" pony. It's rather versatile.

That's why I'm gonna have both my Egnater stuff and my clone Jubilee.

I saw Bonamassa last night here in Knoxville, TN. I figure I'll never have to go to another concert. I'll never see a better guitar player.

He had a different setup than I have seen in photos, (I know he changes them all the time) Marshall, Bogner, Van Weelden, Carol Ann. He played several guitars, but his best sound IMO was with the Goldtop. I was a little surprised he didn't play any Strat.

The only disappointment was that he didn't play any slide except for just a little on the very first number. He made up for it with an epic acoustic solo, though ....

That's the same setup that he had when I saw him. I was wrong when I said he had a two-rock...it was the carol ann.

He doesn't play strat live much anymore. The LP is more "him" he says. I liked the gold top..as well as his flame top LP w/ a bigsby. But that Steve Morse EBMM sounded DAMN GOOD!! :)

If that was the purpley sunburst flame top one, yeah, it was very good. They all sounded great except the Flying V he pulled out for the encore medley, it seemed muddy compared to the others, but it might have been something else, he gave his amp a dirty look, switched pickups, and it cleaned up pretty well ;)
