I can't get V30s or G12T-75s to sound good!

V30s: sound grainy and dark. Can sound pretty good, but can't touch G12Ms. Mic up okay, but I've never found a situation where G12Ms didn't sound better (though the V30s have the whole higher wattage thing going).

G12T-75s: If I play through these with another guitarist, I can't be heard! I seriously have to crank my amp into a Recto 4x12 with these speakers to compete with my buddy's Peavey 5150 combo with a V30 and G12K-100. They do record well though...

Any tips? Other ways of thinking? I love my G12Ms, but I can't crank my amps with them. I want to get a quad of 65w M75 Scumbacks, but that's $600 I don't have right now.

The scumbacks that i tried at tone merchants in a 4x12 were noticeably darker than the stock bogner v30 4x12 that i had a/b'd it with, although they were warmer and smoother. I've played through a bog cab that had a greenback and V30, and that was a nice combo. Two of those with two V30's would probably work nicely in a Bogner 4x12, and might save blowing the crap out of your speakers with your ecstasy, which puts out between 120 to 140 watts when pushed. Another possibility may be to combine the 30's with the 75's, a la ubercab.

You sound like you know what you're doing, but in live or jam situations, I always find MIDDLE and PRESENCE to be my friends...

Just a thought.

Do you know what type of cab the Scumbacks were loaded in? Also, were they M75s and did you prefer them to V30s?

I don't usually turn my amps up too loud into the G12Ms without having another 4x12 to take some of the pressure off. That or with the Ecstasy, I'll use it at half power. I know a full stack would put me in heaven, but four Scumbacks would be more convenient. I'm not really a fan of mixing speakers, actually. Maybe it seems closed minded, but I prefer to really hear the characteristics of each type of speaker, especially when choosing settings for recording. It's probably worth trying though. Hell, if that's what comes in an Uberkab.....

+1 on mids and presence. With my Twin Jet, I've got mids at 1:00, channel presence at 2:00, and master presence at 10:30. I think it's just difficult with these speakers live. I really do like the G12T-75s for recording, but live is another story.

Thanks for your responses!

Well, I guess there's a reason so many live rigs have V30's in 'em yet when I record in a studio, I just always get frustrated with them... The master presence may open your sound up a bit more - remember, the master EQ's are off the power tubes, the Channel EQ's off the preamps. The power valves have the power to really change the texture in a BIG way. Good luck man, I can well imagine it's gotta be frustrating.

Peace,
V.

I've turned up the master presence a little, but it seems to thin out a little too much. Could be a lot worse though; at the end of the day I can always plug into my G12Ms and be struck dumb!

For the time being, I found a solution. That master volume control seems to help a bit!

Classic!!!! As Nigel Tufnel would commend, "this one goes to eleven".

To give a small update, I sold my G12Ms a little while back because although their tone is incredible, a 100w cab just isn't realistic for me. They sounded great in the studio, but broke up a little more than I'd like. Scumbacks are next on my list, but over the past month or so, I've actually been using the 75s and V30s in an X pattern.

At first I like it a lot, and with the Uberschall it was great, but after my first reactions wore off and I got to hearing it a little more, it just wasn't doing it for me. I'm using Mesa V30s too, which I like more than others I've heard, but I think my big complaint is that the 4 speakers just don't respond the way I'd like. I'm going to try and get 4 Scumbacks ordered by the end of August now (I'm broke!): 2 M55s and 2 M75s, both 65w.

Also, am I correct to believe that the speakers in this clip are G12T-75s on the right and G12Ms 55Hz on the left?

try Weber
scumbacks are custom shop webers
you can buy something custom ordered for about $110 each
a custom weber 1225 with a higher wattage and pre-rola doping would be cool
but Webers have will handle at least 30% more than the announced power rating
