I Know This Is A Stupid Question...

I should start by saying that I grew up loving Les Pauls and Marshall stacks. Problem is, when I was a kid I never had the money for a Marshall stack. I once had a Marshall 2x12 combo but I didn't know what I was doing then. Other than that, I never owned or really played a Marshall tube head. When I got back into playing after a 15 year stoppage, I was into Mesas.

So...

Would you say Egnater amps are more like a hot-rodded Marshall or in the Mesa camp. My guess is that it's a Marshall derivative. The reason I ask is that I suddenly have the curiosity to finally play the amp that I dreamed of owning when I was a kid. But if the Egnater M4 is already in that ballpark, I won't consider buying one.

Thanks.

I definitely think Egnater's "core" sound derives from the Marshall camp. The EG 3/4, TOL, and Seminar heads are a JCM800-ish platform, I believe.

Have you heard the clips of James Lugo's shootout of the Marshalls and the Egnater?
Might be worth hearing. The SL2 hangs just fine with the other amps IMO.

FWIW, the 71' Super Tremolo of James Lugo's on that shootout is pretty much dead on of what I think of when I think of the "Marshall Sound." You can bet I am going to be experimenting with my SL to get close to that tone.

Although, if I had an opportunity to pick up a late 60's-early 70's Marshall for a reasonable price, I might do it, too.

Yes, like 80% of Egnater stuff is Marshall derived.

SL
SL2
GNR
EG3/4
EG-5
Seminar Head
TOL MICA
IE-4
Dual Tone Channel B

I would venture to say the Rebel and Tourmaster are also Marshally.

The big difference is the post-gain tone stack.

The only Pregain tonestack in the "distorted" modules is the COD.

The fendery cleans are probably all pregain tonestacks also.

The Vox is a post gain tonestack, I think? but it uses a different group of component values in its tonestack.

If you look at the inside of the modules, on the board, it says "Brit Tube V.XXXX"

If that ain't a dead giveaway, I don't know what is.

Thanks guys. I think I've said that while I didn't immediately warm up to M4 when I first got it, over the last few months, it has become one of those "I'll never sell it" amps. It makes me wonder what the modules were "modeled" after.

A randall RT2/50 will breath new fire into your M4 and pull out tones to die for.

Could you give me the link to the shootout of the Marshall and Egnater? I can't seem to find it. I'd really like to hear those two go head to head.
