I finally got a $12 preamp tube to troubleshoot my volume drop-age problem, and now I have come across 2 problems. 1, the top cover of the preamp tube comes off but the bottom screws wont turn... very fustrating and 2, I want to pull out the chassis to make things possibly easier but have no idea which screws to take out to get the chassis to slide out of its headshell. I am feeling like a neanderthal here, can someone give me the proper advice for a newb trying to accomplish this for the first time please? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chadd

I cannot be of any help here sadly. But I definitely wish you the very best in doing this. Hope you get it all figured out very soon!!

Unmount backpanel. Then unscrew the four screws on the bottom of the headshell.

About the preamp tube: twist the shield, pull it up, pull tube out and then stick new preamp tube into socket.

Changing a pre in the Herbert is not that hard. The V1 is in front of the output transformer.
Remove the shield, face the tube with the big space in the pins (1 and 9) towards the front
grill and gently slide it in. No sweat or chassis removal necessary.

To remove V2-V6 just remove power tube #'s 5 and 6 for space.

The VH4 is another story for preamp tubes.....

I put a new preamp tube into the first slot and as soon as I powered the amp it was fine, then I switched on the standby and all the lights cut out and it shut down. I tried replacing all the power tubes and put in the old preamp tube that had just worked before I replaced it and checked all fuses to make sure I didnt blow one and NOTHING!!! I am so fustrated, I dont have any spare fuses or any more preamp tubes, also I couldnt get the chassis to come out or the preamp shield bottoms to come unscrewed so it made it really difficult to line up the preamp tube pins. Someone please help, no more Herbert for now.

Chad,

do we have an appointment next Saturday ?

;)

You were dead on right about it being the mains fuse. Problem is, the fault lights in the back arent coming on so I have to rule out the power tubes and all the preamp tubes in it work fine, but I have popped 2 fuses in the mains now and dont want to burn through the other 2 I just bought. I know Peter is a busy man and I dont want to bother him, so I thought someone here could give some advice. Hopefully Peter will chime in on here.

You would need three additional fuses . . .

Pull all powertubes, new fuse, put back in just one pair (1,6 - 2,5 - 3,4), switch on. If the fuse survives add next pair. So max. after three tries you'll know which pair is fucked.

The fuses are available in your local Obi/Praktiker "Baumarkt".

Alright Peter Im going to have to wait until then, sad thing is I have a 4 day weekend and cant play the Herbert at all now. My luck I guess.

Funny thing is that the fuses survived all 3 pairs of power tubes going back in... all together 2 sets of 6 power tubes and every time I flip the standby on the fuse blows with no indication from the power tube failure lights ever coming on for a ny of the pairs I put in. Im clueless...
