You could use the preamp section of one of your amps, go direct in, then use power amp and cabinet simulation. That's what I do with my Ecstasy and it sounds, for direct recording, pretty damn good. Also, it's free!
If you want to go directly in from your guitar, Peavey's Revalver III is....decent.
The other option that I am using is a Palmer PDI-09 small box. It is not attenuation box, but only a cab emulation circuit. Plugs between power amp output and speaker. Great sound for something like hundred bucks (or it was some years ago). Sounds great - to me at least...
You can use software ones, as well. I.e. downloading cab impulse wav files and running this through a software such as Voxengo Boogex (I think it was called like this). It is a free one (you can get it at http://www.voxengo.com) - Windows only, though. Here http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap-151/ there are plenty of cab impulse files, if you search there.
I made few experiments with the last. It is too much hassle for me. Browsing through impulses, loading files, adjusting stuff, latency, yadda yadda yadda.... Soundwise it wasn't bad at all, though.
So I just went back to the Palmer. It is the plug and play option.
Voxengo Boogex works best for me. Download that, and use impulses like synchu said. Totally free, and if you've got a decent computer, should be latency free too. For me, this method has the best direct tones I've ever heard.

TheMagicEight,
You answered a similar question I had on the Bogner forum, but I wanted to clarify something. It would probably apply to Diezel's as well. Are you using the send jack from the loop on the XTC as your direct signal, rather than the line out, to get just the preamp sound? Then using software for power amp & speaker sims? I have a Boss BR600 which does has speaker sims-power amp sims I'm not so sure of. Not as flexible as using a computer, but I'm new to recording and it seems decent enough, until I learn a little more about what I'm doing, and have the budget to upgrade.
Nbarts, the BR600 is around $350, and uses the Boss COSM amp models, including some decent models for metal. Dunno if thats out of the price range you're looking to spend, but it's a decent portable unit for laying down ideas. You can also mic a cab, or run direct in from another amp/device. The models aren't in the same league as the actual Diezel or Bogner of course, but for silent recording while sitting on the couch in front of the TV, it does pretty good, IMO.

When I'm just laying down ideas, I run into a Little Labs Redeye... I record the DI from that, and the out goes to a POD XT, which gives me my simulated tone which I also record. That way, I have a decent sounding rough track, but also have the DI to reamp through whatever else later.
