hello finally i sold my marshall dsl 401 40W tube combo amp.
i have to raise a little ( a lot ) of money and chose a new amp to get.
head and cab

i play mainly - 90% of the time - at home so i don't know if the herbert or vh4 is the choice to go or a waste for me :(
i read they both play as well at low volumes too. but i'm scared to fail getting a good and expensive amp like diezel are and not playing it because it is too loud :(
where i live there are not diezel to listen and play, so i need all the advice as possible.

i rememmber you i play metallica's songs, smashing pumpkins... black sabbath ( low gain - more volume ) and 1000 other kind of music, metal, gothic metal , death metal, black metal...
if it helps i don't play songs in the style of ac/dc, crunch stuff.

is a herbert a good choice in your opinion? is it a hi gain amp ( i really think so ) like randalls?

ps: why hasn't the herbert got the gain on the clean channel??

thanx!

Well, I dont have a lot of experience with the Herbert, but I own a VH4 and I can attest to the fact that it sounds sublime at low volumes. Both Herbie and VH4 are very high gain, but so much more.

Of course they both really open up when played at high volumes, but this doesnt retract from the fact that they both sounds great at low volumes.

The Herbert sounds good at low volume. Difficult to crank because it's 180w, but it does everything from pristine clean to massive 'modern' gain. Not sure about the VH4. I play metal on the Einstein (so I use lead channel, and clean and mega modes on ch 2) which is also very versatile and sounds good at low volumes as well - and there's a 50w combo version too.

Any head/cab rig will start to sound better when louder. And even 50w can go LOUD to the point of stupidity in a home setting.

i found an used einstein too but i guess it's not for my playing style and goodies :(

Well...I'm playing quite often at home (flat, above my room is the sleepingroom of my neighbour...) with my herbert and a 412R cab, loaded with g12k 100. Nobody felt ever bothered by my playing since years...the amp is just cool...

@no gain at ch.1 : If you play ch2 on the "-" position, it would sound like ch1 (clean) with more gain...that's the point and that's why there is no "gain" needed.

Buy the herbert and everything would be cool for every time...

greetings from germany

thanx

i'm considering to get a herbert but it's hard to find one in here, new or used...

warranty is a problem too... what if i need it?

To be honest, a 220 ! watt class AB amp needs 10%
to get out of crossover distortion. 22 watts is no bed room level.
This is an area for class A amps.
Why do You want to spend so much money for an amp used
lonely at home with no applause ?
My favourite company is Peavey. They have a lot very good sounding
amps for home players.

Just my 0.002 cents ;)

thanx for this advice Mr. Peter :)

i know it could be a waste played at home, but why home player cannot get a good sound ?? :)
then everyone say they play so good at home..so why not me too :)
sometimes i'll bring it with me to rehearsal too.

i really don't like solid state amps :)

by the way, i wrote the Italian importer to get infos on where to buy one in my city..but i have not received any answer yet...

thanx again

Peavey's are nor solid state. You might also want to check Hughes & Kettner amps, they should have better prices in Europe. :)

i just chedcked them hughes and peavey... as usual there are 10000000 blues amps..crunch amps but nothing for hi gain styles.
i don't want to put another pedal to get distortion..from an amp...
that is wasting the amp sound in my opinion.

I play my Herbert at home, no disrespect to Peter, at around 8:30 to 9 am on the channel and master vols. None of my neighbors ever complained. It's perfectly fine for bedroom playing imo.

Well, you need to create a 7,5 Watter then, built in 8" speaker (alu-kalotte natürlich) driven by a single EL34 thru a Hammond 125ESE (you've got one flying around), no midi of course and just a volume pot. Gain permanently maxxed out and no need for a mid cut, thats what the 8" is for - it should be in a reflex cab then of course, to get those nasty bottom ends to make the pillows scared :D

^What the volume knob will be for ?  It won't be real plug and play (or pray :) ) then.

I am everyday astounded by my Einy - you can literally cannot make it sound bad? Or at least I cannot find how (not that I want) :)

H&K Triamp has nice hi-gain sound, but it's not really a bedroom amp either :)

i read it from many user in fact.
i just watched your videos from you tube scottph :) the Herbert has the sound i need :)

so creamy - liquid sound - warm - then its disortion touch the perfection
3 channels, various modes

the other choice i'm considering is the Brunetti Pirata 141

Dude, no need to rub it in, ok? :) I know I suck. Then again I've only been playing for about four years with no teacher and only two hours max. a week to practice...got more important stuff (to me) in my life... :)

hey i wansn't laughing at you for that :)
it was a smile because i appreciated those videos ;)

There are soooo many better ones of a Herbert in action, it's not even funny.
