I think I prefer EL34's in my Einstein to 6550's

I bought a matched pair of =C= SED's for my Einstein, threw them in, biased them up. It sounded good, and I jammed with them for a couple weeks. I put the EL34's back in last night just to see how it sounded to my ears. Holy carp. I really REALLY prefer them to the 6550's.

Am I weird?

haha
I was thinking about trying them in my Einstein, but after your short review...
I tried KT88 one time in my Randall, and there was only bass...

What exactly do you think the difference was? may save me the time trouble and cash as I had the same thought. I am using Gold Lion KT77's at the moment bias'd to 68 mA.

The 6550's produced a much more extended frequency response, higher highs, lower lows, but they lacked that EL34 midrange bark that I love.

Here, let me try to compare it via an analogy:

Imagine a stream of water. Now, imagine that stream of water filling a sewer pipe. Then, imagine the same amount of water flowing not through something big like a sewer pipe, but a garden hose. The stream of water is the frequency response, the sewer tube stands in for the 6550's and the garden hose stands in for the EL34's.

For what the EL34's lack in the widened spectrum being produced, they make up for by focusing and punching you in the gut.

I dunno. haha.

I didn't like 6550 alone either, but I have the 100 watt and wound up using both for the best of both worlds!

Sounds awesome and I'm sticking with it.

I always get back to EL34 and went through all the hype with the others :) Now extremely happy with EL34 B-STR. Sounds awesome. 100W Einy head here.

I like the E34s cause I get the sound better under my fingers.
I throw the 6550 out of my Einstein.

We went with 6550´s because of the relaibility.
After having also issues with this tube we switched
back to EL34BHT. This is a high voltage version of
the EL34STR. There is no doubt that we prefer the
sound of the 34´s. But I can imagine that some
metal guys prefer the tight low end on the 6550´s.

Gruss Chris

I have 4 x 6550s and 2 x EL34 in my Herbert - before that I did not know that mixing powertubes is that great

... i am still loving the 6550s in my VH4 & 4-6550 & 2 EL34s in my Herbie :D but dats just me

Hey Chris,

Gruss Chris
