I wanna turn my Einstein into a blues machine! (Tubes?)

that's right. I love my Einstein, I thought about selling it to get a Schimidt and try it out, but the used gear market here in Spain is at a low, no one's buying specially "expensive" amps, unless it's the same of stuff ppl buy (Mesa, Marshall etc  ). So I don't wanna sell the Einstein for much less than it's worth only to find out I'd want to buy it again and sell the Schimdt, loosing a lot of money in the process.

So..... now that my Vh4 is it's way to Peter's hands, it should come back as an even better sounding amp. And I'll make it my "heavy music" amp (as well as all the other great stuff it can do!) and convert the Einny into a blues monster!

It already does it extremely well, but I wanna push it more. Not long ago I changed the preamp tubes and it increased the gain on the amp and the overall tightness (sounds AWESOME for Rock/HardRock/Metal) but this time around I want to use some preamp tubes that'll make it sound more open, with a bit more looseness and sparkle, specially so it can shine in the Clean channel. I really wanna go after some AWESOME clean/slighty overdriven tones, ala John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa, SRV, Hendrix!

so c'mon tube snobs, what should I buy.

I already have 6L6s in the power section, so I guess the cleans can't get better than that in the poweramp, so it's all about the preamp tubes.

enlighten me please!

Uuumm....how about flipping it to Texas mode. :D

hehe, it does sound good, but I wanna change the preamp section.

I know preamp tubes have the most effect on the feel of the amp. I want to make it loose, sparkly, bright and chimey.

Right now it's tight, heavy, kind of dark, basically perfect for Hard rock.... but I want it for tha' blues! even if it means I'll loose a bit on the OD tones.

JAN 5751 in V-1 will get you in the area, great sounding tube. 6l6's biased on the hotter side. EL34's would be cool too...either way biased hotter to get some compression going.

alright thanks a lot then boys!

I'll buy them both and I'll play with it to see what it sounds/feels like.

btw, Peter, please let me know once the Vh4 gets there, so I can breathe (I don't trust curriers! :gethim: )

ECC83 Tungsol will maybe help a bit ;)

I found three types of ECC83 Tungsol

1) ECC83 Reissue Balanced
2) ECC83 Reissue V1
3)ECC83 Reissue (which is out of stock atm)

which one yould I go for Peter?

If you want to use it in the V1 position you need a selected V1 tube (ECC83 Reissue V1).

Which lowers the gain more:

1. 5751 in V1
or
2. 5751 in Phase Inverter?

Peter, I'm talking with forumite Proxmax (Klauss) about buying his Prostage x07 pedal for my VH4. The pedal is XLR and the Vh4 is Midi, is there an XLR-MIDI converter for me to use?

will the Vh4 power the pedal?

V-1 sir, it's also a nice chimey tube. Not the best choice for the phase inverter IMO. The JAN 5751's are still pretty cheap too, for NOS anyway.

Also, forgot about the tung-sol, been about a year since I last used one, nice tube.

Cleaner sound over all. To be honest it was probably more than a year ago and I was using the EL34B's then so it's tone isn't really fresh in my mind. Best I can recall it was cleaner with tubby but fairly tight low end(don't know how much of that was the B's though), definitely more air in the highs to it compared to a chinese tube(not more overall highs just more of the delicate highs)... best I can remember mind you, sorry Joey. I do know I liked it but I thought the chinese had better gain and bubbly cleans. The tung-sol I believe was a more solid percussive sounding clean... probably good for blues. ;)

Rather than changing preamp tubes, why not get your blues tone by putting a high quality
preamp pedal at a moderate gain in front of the Einstein, like an Xotic AC+ or BB+
or one of the Lovepedals?

I wanna make the whole amp "blusier". Take the edge of it, make it sound more round and loose. Make the Cleans sound EVEN BETTER than it sounds, more bright and sparkly. A few months ago I made the amp more metal, changed the preamp tubes and it really came alive in the higain territory, I was surprised. But now I have a Vh4 which is the ultimate higainer (even though it's as versatile as it gets and I'll use it A LOT for pop rock and blues too), but I wanna slave the Einstein to the blues! :D

it's got 6L6s in there already and that REALLY changed the clean tones (it sounds a lot better......... I guess I'm a 6L6 guy when it comes to cleans) so I'm sure with the right preamp tubes the amp will deliver what I want from it A LOT better.

I'm sure I'll still be able to get a nice fat hard rock tones from it, hell even metal still, but it's not what I want it to do right now.

oh btw I already have a DS1 which works great with the gain turned off.

I'd love a BB or a fulltone fulldrive but I have other stuff to buy first.

OK, I know this is the Diezel forum and not about pedals, so I will shut up after this, but...
The DS1 and Fulldrive are overdrive pedals. The thing about the Xotics like
the BB+ and AC+ is that they can be setup as full range preamps before your clean channel,
so you can set one side of them up to sound like a different
slightly more gainy preamp channel rather than an overdrive, which might be just the thing to loosen up
the clean channel on your Einstein for blues without losing the qualities that make
Diezels good for everything else.
