I'd like to hear some heavy EG5 clips

I've just gotten around to doing some recording with my Mod50. I'm not quite satisfied with what I'm getting so far. I'm hearing something "nasal" sounding in the upper mids that I'm having a difficult time dialing out on the amp. I don't want to do it with post-eq.

Here's my signal chain: Ibanez rgt220-EG5-Palmer PDI-03-Vintech 1272 pre-Echo Mia card-Sonar 6.

Amp settings:
Preamp: everything at 12:00
Master Volume:12:00
Bright:0
Bass Boost:2
Density:9:00
Presence:9:00

Palmer: Everything flat

If I have time later, I can put up some clips.

I'm going to try an sm57 on the Uberkab. Maybe the Palmer and Mod50 don't want to play nice together. Until then, I'd like to hear what others are doing with their EG5 modules.

Thanks

Try dropping treble to around 10:00. On my mod 50, that helps tame that upper mid rasp a bit.

Thanks

I tried it and it helped. I actually lowered it to around 9:00.

MY EG5 settings are similar. Bass @ 12, mid @ 2, treble @ 9. Gains are at 12 and 2 for channels a and b respectively. Lowering the treble makes all the difference on this module.

I find that "nasal" and "comb filtered" types of results are usually due to the miking of the cabinet, more than anything. To me, the best you can do is a good ribbon mic, about 2" away from the grill cloth, dead center. Try that, and see if that takes the nasalness away.

As a few have posted the magic of this module is the treble and bass. I usually end up no higher than 11 on treble and my presence never moves past 9. Bass +2 on switch and bass knob at 10. Mids 2 or 3 o clock! Look out!

+1 THIS.

That does sound great. W/ my setup, I run the bass switch on 1, lows at 2 oclock, mids at 10 oclock, highs at 2 oclock, and bright off. That's a killer tone too! W/ 6550s, you don't need the bass switch on 2 IMHO. TS5881s...you do :)

Wow. Those are basically identical to my EG5 settings. I have the treble dialed way down too.

Tonight I'm going to dime the bass and +2 bass boost. I'm glad I have the M4: no presence control. Presence is the tone control of the devil. I just can't stand any top-end harshness or fizz. I don't know how I owned a Mesa Road King II for 18 months.
