You got to change the complete head shell. You did on the Uberschall anyway.

Have a dealer order you one. I just got it for $160 from my dealer. And you don't have to change the headshell on either the Uber or XTC - I've done it on both.

Guess Bogner is wrong in his FAQ's on the website. and, dammit, I paid $400 to get a metal Uber-Shell in 2008. I am going to have to speak to my sorry ass agent :gethim:

ECSTASY Questions (same for Uberschall)

Can I put a metal grill on my existing non-metal grill head? No, each grill attaches differently.

Ah, well....shit. Thanks for that.

Is the TJ the same width chassis as the original Uberschall?

You do have to do something with the wood that the plate is mounted on. There is no tolex on it - like with the standard metal grille headshell (which is why they say you need the new head shell). You can either paint it black, glue tolex or it do what I do. I use black duct tape.  I did it as a temporary hold over until I got some tolex, but it looked just like tolex anyway (same texture and sheen) so I just left it alone.

I was going to say something similar. Some of the wood trimming might not be painted uniformly black, but nothing a can of Krylon couldn't fix. Or you could go for authenticity and glue strips of tolex to the wood supports.

I did a metal grill conversion a few months back and went through this myself, lol.

I never thought of black duct tape though.
