I'm thinking hard about a Tonelab...

Anyone have any clips of the heavier sounds? I know people say it ain't for metal, but they said that about the DG Stomp and MagicStomp, and I've got metal out of both... I mainly want something else for color and to consolidate my live rig, which right now consists of a DG, expression pedal, MosValve, and two 2x12s running v30s.

So then, can it do non-thrashy heavy stuff? Is it a good option? Clips?

Reason I'm not going Line 6 is because I've ALWAYS heard the same sort of... sonic fingerprint on the Line 6 stuff, and I don't like it. In the POD 2.0 it was very pronounced, and the XT stuff, while a lot better, still has it. Yamaha has their own sonic fingerprint for their modeling stuff as well, but theirs doesn't bother me. I mainly hear it in the pick attack of both.

So is the Tonelab LE a good choice for live rig front-end and direct recording fairly chunky rhythm?

I think it's a great choice. It has the best feel of any modeler for playing, has that nice tube amp feel...and the clean/mid gain/higher gain tones sound very tube ampish.
I think it's the best modeler choice out there right now.
I've owned the POD 2.0 and the PodXT live.

Given the clips of my music on my MySpace, for instance, do you think it'd work for my style?

Or, a better example of what I've been going for:

It's like... this is... very close... to the tone I want... just needs an extra... push over the cliff in terms of heavy, and I'm thinking some kind of tub-ey sag/feel in the tone might help, or at least a different color added to it.

Also I need to be able to approximate that live, and the DG rig, while great for my older stuff, lacks that shade of chunk... great for other chunk, but lacks that color/shade of chunk.

I think if you set it to the Modern UK setting you will get a nice tone that you need...it sounds like you are going for a thick tube amp tone but not really over saturated.
Check out the Tonelab LE.

Nice tone! The Tonelab LE could come close to that and it gets that bit of sag nicely....I couldn't get that feel from the Line 6 stuff.
There are built-in, nice sounding boost/drive pedals you can add and a post EQ for more tonal shaping, so much tweaking to be done...but a good ear could pull it off. ;)

Great, thanks. :) I'll have to try one out at GC tomorrow then. That clip was MagicStomp on guitar and bass (it's actually phenomenal on bass, I hadn't tweaked it that much for that track). It just sounds like it needs a little more in the way of sag/oomph.

That tone to me is like a medium steak whereas I want more of a medium rare... not more raw, but just a tad juicier.

I haven't noticed anyone else here really using a Tonelab LE...I could be wrong, but you might not be in for many replies.

That's alright, if nothing else I'll take it on the GC "test drive" - luckily ASCAP provides me with a 10% discount there (according to the employees... I thought it was 5% according to ASCAP) so I should be out the door under $400, with their 30-day return policy in place.

well every time I mention it I get ignored but

VH1classic Albums- Iron Maiden # of the beast

Dave Murray was running a Johnston J-station into the board
(& probably thru a marshall tube power amp)

FWIW, DM was copping some serious lead tonage wit it !

I've owned most of the popular modelers and i think the Tonelab is the best one. The PODXT sounds like a dream come true, until i plug it in and hear that sound, the thing just has this underlying tone present in most of the amps models that bugs me. I own a J-Station now but it's not nearly as flexible as the Tonelab and i feel i can get them to sound similiar.

FWIW, i used a Tonelab all over this song/clip/wankfest/clamfest/hamsterfist....whatever you want to call it

Yeah the TL is the best sounding/feeling modeler. I'm actually selling the deskstop version if you're interested. Only $175 shipped. New condition with original box.

I would be interested if I had a way to control it... one of the main reasons I'm looking at the LE is because of the floorboard setup. Otherwise I'd be on that like white on rice. :)

That sounds good - is there anything with more in the way of rhythm tone? That's what I'm more concerned about, I seem to pull a decent lead tone out of anything up to and including the shitty "First Act" amp my fiance had from when she was learning guitar.
