Imagine if Eddie Van Halen never cut up his Destroyer?

I remember reading that he loved the way his Ibanez Destroyer sounded until he took a chainsaw to it.
I wonder if we'd all be playing hot-rodded explorer shaped guitars.

I don't believe he stopped liking it after cutting it. He still used it for the VH I tour and most likely on VH II. Then he tried to copy it with the Star guitar. He misled us numerous times back in the day. I would too. Everybody was ripping off his sound, technique and guitars. I still do all three of those things. I think the reason the Shark got left behind at some point was his desire to use the tremelo bar. Especially live.

I think I remember him saying multiple times it didn't sound good after he cut it up. Makes sense.

Just a couple things:

1.) He really didn't like the tone anymore after he cut it up. He's said it numerous times. As an example of why I don't think he was just saying that to throw people off, he borrowed Chris Holmes' Destroyer for recording VH II because he needed a good sounding, unmolested one - you can see it on a stand in some of the VH II era studio pics. Chris has talked about this as well...
2.) The Star body (and the Hydra) was something Wayne Charvel came up with as far as I understand it. At least that is how Wayne describes it when he mentions it. ;) Never heard him give Ed and credit for that body style.

I was talking about these pictures, but now that I look at them, I may have the timeframe wrong and this may be from the Women and Children First sessions. My point is still the same though... he borrowed Chris' guitar because he didn't like how the cut up one sounded...

Well, he's also said that he never liked how the VHII Bumblebee sounded, and he used that for how many world tours? Hard to believe him when he says he doesn't like how something sounds when he turns around and uses it extensively.

Ummm.... He used that VH II guitar for part of the VH II tour and part of the WACF tour trying to get it to work for him... Most of both of those tours were still the original guitar from VH I. I never saw him use it after that...

Sorry, I'm not EVH expert. I've read that he used it on three world tours, and I assumed that was accurate.

The VHII guitar(Black and yellow) was used toward the end of the 78 tour in japan up until the WACF tour(sparingly).

Am I the only one looking at that unpainted superstrat in the picture and wondering if I will need to consult my physician for an erection lasting more than 4 hours?

If Eddie loved that Ibanez Destroyer so much and he ruined his, why didn't he replace it? The year was 1980 or 1981. Those guitars sold for what, $300 back then? He couldn't have snagged 10 more on his world travels and with his wallet? There's a '58 LP that he somehow found and bought in that pic. If that Destroyer was in fact the holy grail, IMO he would have replaced it with 30 more of them.

When Edward started to make money he bought a 58 and a 59 Gibson Les Paul in the early part of 1980 he spend $5k to $6k for them (each)back then.

Isn't that strat the one he had made by Boogie Bodies 2" thick to make up for the thin sound he says he got with the Floyd Rose in place of the Fender trem ?
