Hey guys, what a wonderful MB you have here, Ive been bouncing back and forth between here and TGP for the past few weeks....and got a couple of questions/request maybe......

One of my studio partners brought me over this piece of gear which seems to be a fairly decent piece....hardly any info on it online.... Its a Rocktron velocity valve ....Designed by Egnater. Its a big ass power amp, thing weighs like 50 or so pounds it seems says 80wX80w. I sold a bunch of gear for him online and he pretty much just gave me this thing for it. SO I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this?????? as (which leads into next question) I getting a new tube head soon and was trying to come up with all my options.

I really like the options of the modular series stuff and the clips are all nice esp on the lower gain stuff. But I hadnt noticed really anything that showcased the eg5 or supposed high gain amp modules at lower gain levels, going for sounds you could maybe get with some lower gain channels from a Herbert or such, what do these modules sound like backed off. OR would there need to be a whole nother module, I really dig the Herbie cleans and channel 2 lower gain sounds. I realize were not trying to rip off anyones stuff, just wondering if anyone else liked those sounds and found a module that quenched there thirst in that regards???....if so what clips could one point me etc.

Power amp is killer..if you got it for $800 you would be fine..but free...man you lucky bastard.
I think that the EG5 does a great job of going from molten gain to lower. But Bman and SL are better at mid clean gain. IMO

Yeah, well I dont guess its totally free, hes a good friend of mine and Ive def done some favors for him over the years, hes got this prosonic fender he is in love with, and I dont think hes quite the tone chaser I am....

Yea I really liked the bassman tone on the indoor storm clips Id like to hear some more of those, and also is there a big diff between the sl and sl2 I havent heard them compared side by side yet

There's a big difference in feel. The SL has more of a really thick and juicy (JTM45 and Plexi) vibe. It's super warm and thick. The SL2 is more of a JCM800 on ChA (pretty much sounds like the stock JCM800 I used to have, with just a bit more low end and mid-range warmth), and ChB has hot-rodded Marshall written all over it. So, yes there is a big difference in the modules. I initially "thought" I could just have one...(the SL2) and boy was I wrong! The SL is one of my favorite modules for sure! EG5 still wins as my favorite...but ya know ;).

SO im thinking maybe Velocity valve power section ......... Ive got a Diezel 2x12 with V 30's ......Im assuming that would suffice??? and the m4....not too many of those around for sale it appears??? ;(

That would be a killer setup man... do the M4!!!

Bottom line for the SL and SL2: The SL "feels" vintage-y and has less gain. The SL2 "feels" more modern and tight, and has more gain. Both are incredible.

So if I did the M4 route, what is the deal with the power amp???? do you feel for those of you that own both, that you have a lil more control with the power amp as opposed to the mod50??? or vice versa what are the diffrences here?? also no fx loop so how does that affect you as well for getting fx

Honestly, if I had to go down to "one rig" I'd probably keep the M4 and sell the VHT. Thankfully I don't have to do that. If I had to move to one rig, that would mean I would have to be space constrained and would need the smallest / most portable rig. I can get the tones I want out of my Mod50 w/ 6550s. The VHT just seems to be a a bit "bigger" and somewhat more aggressive sounding for the higher gain stuff, and a bit less "organic" (not in a bad way at all) in the mids. I think both have their pros and cons. W/ the M4 you don't need an effects loops, since basically the "space between" your M4's output and power amp's input is a series effects loop. That's how I run all of my effects. I use the Lexicon MPXG2 which can place effects before and after the M4. Stuff like a Tube Screamer, Phasers, Octafuzz, etc goes before, and choruses, flangers, delays, and verbs go after. There are units (like the Suhr Mini-mix http://suhrguitars.com/tonetools.aspx#minimix ) that can turn a series effects loop into a parallel effects loop if you really want that. I personally prefer series effects loops, and having a good processor that can set the "wet / dry" level internally.

OK so I found the other thread about the m13 or g sys..... that answered all of my questions there, ......This power amp i have needs a overhaul .....are there recommended tubes for use with the M4 .... it looks like the rocktron can only use 5881 or el34s.....any recommendations there???

The clips you hear on indoor storm helped me with my Decision, but when i received the m4 and ran it through a Randall rt2/50 the sound surpassed what was on the clips. The m4 is by far the best sounding and most flexible preamp or amp i have ever heard or used. Now for the Rt2/50 amp its one of the best imho beside the vht 2902 or 2150, If the rt would take 6550 tubes it might be one of the best imo at this time with its midi channel switching and switching left or right outs, by it being so flexible, and designed by Bruce Egnater :D

What do you guys think the best power amp is with the M4 ? RT2/50 or one of the VHTs?
I sold my last stereo power amp years ago. Mono works better for me live. I use the power section of my Mark IV or Sig-X , looping out the pre with my GCX. They work better than my other amps for this.
As a start place what would you get for the first four in a M4 ?
thanx

Well, Ive got this rocktron velocity valve unit in the shop just getting it all checked out....it can take 5881 (6l6) and el34 it would be cool if i could take one set of each per channel so then I could run both,

heres a question 6550's are just el34's right??? so if an manufacturer says it can take 6l6 and el's it should accept 6550's????? Im just getting deep into the tube stuff and the rack setup as well, ...

I bought steves' M4 he had for sale on here the other day...what a great guy and gotta a great deal so I got 6 modules now and 1 m4.....might need to find another...not likely hopefully Ill be able to play with this rig for awhile depending on $$$$

I believe the 6550s are KT88 class,diferent than EL34s or 6L6s
