Hello All...So I'm new to this forum but long time player (15+ years) and I've lerking for the past several days and decided to join. You guys seem be a little more mature and knowledgable than the folks on HC.

Ok so now that I've introduced myself I have a couple of questions. I've been looking at trading in a second JSX (I dig my first) I got stuck with from a bum dead at a music store here in town (Houston, TX) and I've researching Splawns. Are the cleans really as bad as I've heard on these things? I'm hoping to try one out in a few days so I guess I'll find out for myself, but I thought I might get some informed opinions. The cleans are one of the reasons I bought the JSX. The band I play is quite versitile and I need a high gain amp that is as well. Any suggestions that won't cost 4Gs?

Brad

Welcome aboard!

Have you looked at the Mesa Mark IVs? They are pretty unparalleled in terms of versatility. The JVM is also a contender. Both have very good cleans.

welcome man!!!!

and +1 on either the JVM or the mark IV. A DSL 100 isn't too bad either.

It's funny you mention the JVM's...the same guy that turned me on to the JSX just gave me a good recommendation on them so I might check them out. I've read a lot about the Mark VI's but no place in Houston carries them and I'd prefer to play before I pay if you know what I mean ;-) But I will check them out...thanks for the hints!

Thanks for the warm welcomes! You guys think the mark IV would work well with a Marshall 412 cab (w/75's)?

Not a Splawn expert but I believe Scott has improved the clean channel from his first versions.

Welcome btw :)

He did, and I just heard he added a footswitch jack so you can also change between the gears! That makes it even more versatile, and definitely worth adding to the list of amps.

Welcome to the forums! Anyways, If you want to try a Mark IV, call the Clear Lake GC on NASA Rd. 1. They had a combo in last time I was down there (a couple weeks maybe?). Make sure that if you play the combo you hook it up to a cab as well. They should have a JVM too---I know the GC in North Houston has a JVM and a used Mark III, but no dice on the IV's anywhere other than Clear Lake from what I've seen. Good luck amp hunting--I love my Mark IV.

Hey Brad!

If you're not locked in to Marshalls, check out the Krank Revolution. I played a 5150 for 12-13 years, and was totally blown away by the awesome cleans, and the clarity and power of the lead channel. I do al ot of different things musically and have found it to be very versatile as well.

Give it a few days... :D

You're going to get a ton of Mesa MkIV reco's here. Tough to argue. I'd add the Egnater Mod50 to the list with the appropriate modules. I have the Randall RM100 and if you pick the right modules you can go anywhere from Fender to Vox to Plexi and Soldano with great results.

If you wanted something a little different then there's a lot of noise about the Cornford amps, specifically the RK100 and Hellcat heads.

Welcome! You'll get lots of great feedback and info here. The guys are all real helpful and very knowledgeable!

For some amps that have great cleans and high-gain tones, check out a Mesa Mark III or Mark IV. Engl amps also have great great clean and high-gain tones. I LOVE my Blackmore! Super simple and sounds great!

Actually I called the GC on Westheimer last night and they had a used Mark IV with a 212 cab but I can't afford it till I sell one of the JSXs, which I'm in the process of.

Wow! Certainly doesn't sound like a Marshall amp...I'll definitely have to check the JVM out. I'm running both my JSXs through Marshall cabs so a Marshall would work with the cab well...but then again so might anything lol. Thanks for the clip!
