Have any of you guys gotten to AB the new Peavey Invective with a 6505 or 6505+ or other modern high gain heads? If so, how did they compare for strictly high gain tones? Which head did you prefer?

Got a good playthrough at NAMM but that was it. I still can't believe how little there is out "in the wild" on these amps.

They sound cool would like to see more on them as well, I'm also wonder how the new Amptweaker head will compare

I have owned them all including the new Invective.. My favorite is the 6505+ ! ! !.... The entire series sounds great though , I also like the Fender EVH 5150 line.

For strictly high gain purposes how did the invective compare to the 6505+? That one is also my favorite of the bunch. Which one is the tightest or most growly or aggressive? Are the invective and 6505+ more or less the same sounding on the lead channels?

Based on the clips the invective seemed more open/less compressed, and drier/less saturated than the 6505+, but hard to say for sure since there aren't many clips to go by. It also seemed maybe less midrangy than the 6505 and 6505+. I always found the 5150/6505 series to have a slightly nasally quality to them that I never liked, but as I said I don't buy into clips too much

i have an evh stealth, peavey 6534+ and the new invective. the invective sounds like a perfect mix of the evh and peavey line to me. they knocked it out of the park with this mp in my opinion. it has became my new #1 for gigging. the cleans are amazing for a high gain amp.

i agree with braintheory, in that the amp is a bit more dry than a standard 5150/6505 or II/+ variant. it still sounds great though to me

I've only ever played the 6505+ a few times in shops but have to say I was impressed. I gravitated to the more expensive border line "boutique" stuff pretty much from the get go and skipped over the more typical production amp products and thought after playing the 6505+ that I need to back up a bit at some point and take one home.

+1

I am the same way. I had the Invective, could not bond with it. For me, i like the 5150 II more, and the 5150 III is my all time #1.

I found the Invective too fat and loose. The boost tightens it a lot,but it did not have the bark i like in the II, i also had feedback issues with it and i do not use a lot of gain.

I need to say that i do not bond with the original 5150 either, loose, big, fat, lower mids focused, saturated. These are all terms i don`t like in an amp!!!!!

Tight, focused, high mids, dry, punchy, Marshally......... These are the terms i like

The clean was great, but the clean on the II is so perfect for me, chorus and delay. Bam.

I did not like the crunch at all, too FAT,no crunch. Very smooth. Hate that.

6550 tubes helped a lot, but still. Could not justify the price difference.

yah know 7 stringer, I agree with you in the amp sounding fat and loose. the amp is dry to me but has those characteristics you mention. I boost all of my amps, and right now have the precision drive out front of it which really helps it out. I also like the fortin 33 pedal out front of it set to about halfway. it gives It this gnarly metallic mid grind without thinning out the amp. I cant stand the 33 with my evh head or my 6534+ but it works well with the invective. the claim to fame for me with the invective is the footswitch and dual loops as ell as the built in input gate which works very well for me.

for gigging it seems perfect. for the studio I could definitely see using different amps in its place. I love the recorded tone of my evh stealth head with a mxon OD808 out front. it is all over my bands new record coming out soon. the stealth head and my quickrod blended made for some sweet tones !!!

did you ever try KT88's in it ? I am very curious what they would sound like

I can understand liking all the features of the Invective : two loops , built in boost and noise gate, awesome switching options .... Thats why I pre-ordered one when they were first announced, but when it showed up for me the tone wasn't as good as my 6505+ , I hate to say it because I was really hoping it would be as good or even better but for my taste it fell short. Thats not to say a lot of people won't love it.

I did not try KT 88's, but the 6550's where a great improvement for me, cleans where better, crisper, as every other channel. But in the end, my 5150 II was just better. I hit it with a Precision Drive for flavor and it gets surgucal tight. Only thing i miss is having three usable channels, as if you hit the crunch switch, it gets way too loud. It woul need a separate gain and volume for the crunch.

The 5150 III solved everything!!!!!! Really love that amp. Channel two is pure magic.

I’m sure it’s a great amp and I would be interested.

However, the 6505+ is such a great amp, I’m not sure how the core tone could be any better. The Invective has a ton more features, but I don’t care about any of it.

I hesitate to say it but the 6505+ has killed all my gas for modern amps. A Marshall and a good Blackface and I’m good.

I’ve had Soldanos, Mesa’s, Engl’s, etc...... and none come close for me.

I feel the same way, the 6505+ is my favorite amp. I spend the majority of my time playing and recording late 80s thrash and my Rockmaster preamp is much better suited to that material. But, when it's time to just play and not record that stuff the 6505+ is my go to.

Hasn't stopped me from gassing for a KSR though.

:)

My next amp will likely be a 6505+. I've been wanting one for too long and for the price, especially used, it seems like a no brainer for a metal head like me.

You should definitely give the KSR stuff a go if you get the chance; GREAT amps

I took in a 6505+ as trade for my Invective, for sale, and when that sells, i am either going with a Revv 100P or the new KSR Juno.

I need a very djenty tone, aggressive and tight.

I was so hoping to like the Invective :aww:

Surprised on the reactions here. Good for me, kills the GAS on this one. NEXT!
