So as most/some of you may know Van Halen's 'Eruption' has been voted the best guitar solo for the second year in a row by GuitarWorld rag.

Do you agree?

What is your favorite solo?

Mine is probably the trailing solo in 'One Foot Out the Door'. It takes up about half of the song and it just rips with passion. It fits the song and the album so well. But yeah, 'Eruption' was my fav solo for a long time TBH. That amp screams. Modded or not. :D

A close second would be the solo in 'Big River' off of A Different Kind of Truth.

Doesn't have to be VH

Just curious what everyone's fav solo is :dunno:

It's not a favorite for me, however I can't pick a single one either. Solos that rank 'up there' to me:

More Than a Feeling
Back in Black
Little Wing (if you could call this a solo)
Drive Home

No EVH. I'm boycotting VH because of Rig-Talk. ;)

The solos in this song are magnificent, though most here probably won't appreciate it.

First solo at 2:47. Second solo begins about 3:51.

Mastodon is my VH. I love these drunks. Great band. The opening solo/riff after the intro always gets me.

Freebird!

Really can't think of my fav solo. A good solo fits the song, but beyond that not sure what makes one better than the other unless we're talking about crazy technique. In that case, probably something by Vai. That guy's nuts.

My favorite solo is the first solo in Mr Crowley. I'll never forget the chill that went down my spine when I first heard that solo. The second solo is incredible as well, but the first one blew me away even more. IMO Randy Rhoads is the best rock guitarist of all time and head and shoulders above at least 99% of rock/metal guitarists. His phrasing is impeccable and he is one of the only guitarists who plays fast, but still very musical, moving solos.

Personally, I think that musically 'Eruption' is garbage except for the tapping part at the end, which is pretty cool. In general, I think EVH is stupidly overrated as a guitar player and I'm not crazy about his tone either. It's always too congested and sometimes nasally in a weird way.

Petrucci's solo in Under a Glass Moon from Images and Words.

Nuno's solo in Rest in Peace

Clapton's solo in Layla (acoustic especially)

We're cut from the same cloth, braintheory

I think it is! It's got all of the ingredients to make it. It was a game changer, all original techniques which have re written guitar playing and to this day holds it own against anything else. It's not the most technical but the average person on the street can identify it after a few bars. Hotel California is up there also I believe, people just love that solo. I would think some of David Gilmores' solos would be up there too.

Something like Voodoo child from JIM would be my choice. It has elements that have NEVER been reproduced. Except when SRV got a hold of it. And it was just as good or better. But EVH I really can't even listen to any of his playing anymore.

All things considered, it has to at least make an appearance on a long list of the best. It's certainly one of the most recognizable.

There are just too many solos to say any single one is better than the rest. For me, it's about context; I can easily ignore something that is technically off the charts if it doesn't fit the song. Conversely, a simple passage that evokes emotion can be incredibly powerful and memorable. There are even particular runs and fills that are so perfect and fit that 10 or 15 second window so well that I enjoy them more than most full on "solos".

Or
Gary Moore "still got the blues for"
x2
& Stairway to heaven...EVH eruption is also right up there...

Schenkers solo in "Lights Out" live in Chicago is up there for me as well as:
Vivian Campbells solo in "Rainbow in the Dark" . Not the most technical piece ever arranged but it just works.
Dimes solo in "Floods". Not a Pantera fan but man it gives me chills.

For me:

Gary Moore - Still got the blues
Steve Vai - For the love of god
David Gilmour - Comfortably Num live on Pulse
Gary Moore - The Loner
