Is The EG5 Noisier Than Other Mods?

It seems that way to me. I definitely get more hiss from the EG5 as I crank the gain and master than other mods.

And I would guess also since it has an upper mid and high end frequency center that makes the hiss a little more noticable too.

Yes because it has tons of gain.

True but it's noisier than the MHG and Erect as well. It's not bad but it's more noticeable.

I dont have MHG anymore but from what I recall, the EG5 has even more gain than that. I think both MHG and EG5 have significantly more gain than E-Rect.

Do you find MHG and E-Rect have similar amount of noise and just EG5 has noticably much more? Maybe its the preamp tubes in the EG5. Mine was noisy with EH. Been pretty quiet with JJs.

My eg5 was noisier than my other mods. It might have been a preamp tube thing, but I didn't really bond with it.

Folks, nothing is free - more gain = more noise. The EG5 I had was a freaking flamethrower gain-wise - I could run the gain on it at 10 o'clock and had plenty of saturation. Add to that the fact that it's tonal center was upper mids, and yeah, it is noisier than other modules but not defective.

Pete

The noise doesn't bother me/get excessive so long as the Bright switch is on 0...1 is more..and 2 more so..for obvious reasons.

If there was ever a module that DIDNT need a bright switch its the EG5! Keep that on 0!

I understand that more gain means more noise. I've played a Bogner Uberschall that was hissier than a gay rattle snake stuck in Richard Simmons corn-hole. I just noticed that it's a bit noisier than the MHG and Erect and wanted to find out if anyone heard the same thing.

Dude that's just hilarious :). But yes, I never use the Bright switch on the EG5. And I use a gate in the effects loop to keep it super quiet!

It is due to the fact that both MHG and Erect have scooped mids compared to EG5. Now I am not saying they don't have mids but when you put them up against 5...they don't! Gain resides in the mids and treble and 5 is at the most agressive side of mids!

Agressive my ass, I could have used the EG5 I had for controlled demolition of structures with a Randall RM20 combo! :D

Thanks Pete I worked really hard at making it a "ready to demolish" tone!

Got it. I just played for about 30 minutes or so. The mods really are different even if it's just a cap or resistor value that makes the difference.

I'm thinking about trying the M4 with a Mesa 2:90 or something just to see how it's different from the VHT.

I hated the Mesa 2:90. I used my M4 w/ the 2:90 for a bit, and it was dark and muddy. The way Mesa designs their power amps, I just don't understand. It was rolling off a lot of my high end, and just was not nearly as punchy and full sounding as the VHT power amps. What I would recommend, is to get a 2/90/2. The 2/90/2 is designed after the VHT 2150 power amp, which is held by MANY people as the best power amp ever. I've owned one and absolutely loved it. The 2/90/2 was about 95% as good as the 2150, but lacked the huge monsterous gerth that the 2150 had. What led me to sell the 2150, is that is a 4-space friggin heavy piece of rack gear, and I was getting killer tone out of the 2/90/2 w/ 6550s. If I were a touring musician, I'd still have the 2150 w/ the 2/90/2 as a backup.

I really do like the 2/50/2, but the 2/90/2 is really just that much better. They are two differing designs, where most people that I know that have A/B'ed them pick the 2/90/2.

Is there a big difference in weight between them Eric?

No, not significant weight between the 2:90, 2/50/2, and 2/90/2. The 2150, yeah there is :). That power amp is HEAVY!
